# Flying Blue Family: share miles with your household

Last updated: 8 October 2026 - 14 min read - Based on [Flying Blue](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/>) and 15+ independent sources

By [Remco de Graaf](<https://skystatus.pro/about>) Founder of SkyStatus, Flying Blue member since 2005, currently Ultimate. Also Managing Director and co-owner at Reshift Digital. Founder of Zoom.nl (120,000 users) and Zoom Academy (80,000 paying students). Experience includes at least 15 mileage runs and visits to at least 60 countries.

Miles scattered across two or three accounts in the same house rarely add up to a single award seat. One person is short, another sits on a balance they never use, and the booking falls apart. Flying Blue Family fixes exactly that, letting a household pool everyone's miles into one account that can actually book the trip. This guide shows who can join, how pooling works in practice, and where it quietly saves you the most, including the perks that cover children.

## What is Flying Blue Family?

**Flying Blue Family** is a free service from Air France-KLM that lets you pool [miles](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/how-to-spend-flying-blue-miles>) within your household. One adult becomes the Family Leader and can transfer miles from other members to their own account. The Family can have a maximum of **8 members**: 2 adults and 6 children. Children aged 2 to 11 get a **[25% discount on award tickets](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/landing-page/informative/family-youngs>)** when they travel with an adult, and miles never expire for members under 18. Flying Blue Family has been available since April 2022.

Flying Blue Family: members transfer miles one-way to the Family Leader's account. Only the leader can initiate transfers and book awards. Transferred miles cannot be returned.

## How does Flying Blue Family work?

Flying Blue Family uses a **Leader model**: an adult (18+) creates a Family account and becomes the Family Leader. All other members are invited by the Leader. The core mechanism is simple, but there are several important rules to be aware of:

- **One-way only:** only the Leader can transfer miles, and only from members to the Leader's account. Members cannot exchange miles with each other
- **Manual:** miles are not automatically pooled. The Leader must initiate each transfer manually
- **Permanent:** transfers are irreversible. Miles cannot be sent back to the original member
- **Miles only:** [XP](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/what-is-flying-blue-xp>) cannot be shared. Each member earns and keeps their own XP for [status qualification](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-status-levels>)

**No XP sharing:** this is the most common misconception about Flying Blue Family. You can pool miles, but XP remains strictly personal. If your partner wants to reach [Silver](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-silver-status>) or [Gold](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-gold-status>), they need to [earn XP themselves through flights](<https://skystatus.pro/tools/xp-calculator>) or a Flying Blue credit card.

## Setting up your Family: step by step

Before you start

1. All family members need their own **Flying Blue account** (children from age 2)
2. The person creating the Family must have been a Flying Blue member for at least **24 hours** ([Flying Blue Family FAQ](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/landing-page/informative/family-youngs>)). The official Family page publishes no such wait for the members you invite
3. Decide who becomes the **Leader**: this is the person who manages all miles and books award tickets. The Leader must be at least **18 years old** (art. 4.2 T&C)

### Step 1: go to Flying Blue Family

Log in to [klm.com](<https://www.klm.com/profile/flying-blue/family>) or [airfrance.com](<https://www.airfrance.com/>). Go to **My Profile** and click **Flying Blue Family** in the side menu. You automatically become the Family Leader.

### Step 2: invite members

Enter the **first name, last name, and Flying Blue number** for each member. The member receives an invitation and must accept it within **14 days** through their own Flying Blue account. If not accepted, the invitation expires automatically.

**Expiry after 14 days (art. 4.4 of the terms):** a Family invitation expires automatically after **14 days** if it is not accepted. The Family Leader can withdraw a pending invitation at any time. If an invitation expires, simply send a new one.

### Step 3: check the 7-day membership rule

A member must have been in the Flying Blue program for at least **7 days** (168 hours) before miles can be transferred out of their account. That is how Flying Blue states the rule on its official Family page, so a long-standing member is ready the moment the invitation is accepted, while a freshly created account waits out the week.

**Tip:** choose the person who flies most frequently or holds a credit card that earns Flying Blue miles as the Leader. The Leader manages all miles and books the award tickets. In practice, this is usually the most active Flying Blue member in the household.

## Transferring miles: the rules

The Leader can transfer miles from a member to their own account at any time. Here is how it works:

1. Log in and go to the Flying Blue Family page
2. Click **"transfer miles"** next to the member whose miles you want to transfer
3. Choose the number of miles (full or partial)
4. Confirm - the miles appear in the Leader's account

**72-hour processing (Flying Blue Family FAQ):** the **first** miles transfer within a Family takes up to **72 hours** to process. The official Family page states no processing time for later transfers, so plan ahead whenever you need miles for a time-sensitive booking.

### Important transfer rules

| Rule | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Direction | Only from member to Leader (not the other way around) |
| Reversible? | **No** - transfers are permanent |
| Cost | Free (vs EUR 3/250 miles for regular transfer) |
| Waiting period | 7 days of Flying Blue membership |
| **Validity** | After each transfer, **all Flying Blue Family Miles are valid for two years** (official Family rule) |
| Partial? | Yes, you can transfer part of the miles |

![SkyStatus miles ledger filtered to Transfer in, January 2026: three Flying Blue Family transfers of 9,632, 9,086 and 663 miles, each Free.](/guide/images/family-ledger-transfers-in-202610.webp?v=a44a51500b31c1ac)

Flying Blue Family transfers into my account as Family Leader in January 2026: three entries of 663, 9,086 and 9,632 miles, each one marked Free.

**Miles and the expiry date:** outside Germany, since 4 May 2026 your whole balance shares a **single 24-month expiry date** (the German market keeps its own rule: 3 years plus the remainder of the calendar year). Every qualifying earning activity - a flight, a purchase on a co-brand Flying Blue Amex, or miles through a partner - resets that clock for your entire balance to 24 months. Have [Silver](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-silver-status>) status or higher, a co-brand Flying Blue Amex, [Flying Blue Extra](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-extra>), or are you under 18? Then your miles do not expire at all. For Family transfers specifically, Flying Blue's official rule is: after each transfer, all Flying Blue Family Miles are valid for two years. Official materials do not settle whether the never-expiring exemptions (status, co-brand card, Flying Blue Extra, under 18) override that two-year horizon, so plan around the two-year date. More on this in our guide on [preventing miles from expiring](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-miles-expiration>).

## Benefits for children

Flying Blue Family offers two exclusive benefits for children that no other comparable program provides:

### 25% discount on award tickets (ages 2-11)

Children aged 2 through 11 receive a **25% discount** on award tickets when traveling with an adult. To get it, book the award on the **Air France or KLM website**. Flying Blue names no other condition on its [official Family page](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/landing-page/informative/family-youngs>).

Example: family vacation to New York

A round trip Amsterdam - New York in Economy starts at around **50,000 miles** per person (25,000 one-way, dynamic price). With the 25% child discount, a child costs **37,500 miles**. For a family of 2 adults and 2 children, you save **25,000 miles** on the round trip. In Business Class, the savings are even greater.

### Miles never expire for children under 18

For members under 18, miles **never expire**. The standard 24-month inactivity expiration does not apply. Miles that children earn through flights remain in their account until they turn 18. As [Frugal Flyer](<https://frugalflyer.ca/blog/flying-blue-family-account-guide/>) aptly puts it: this makes it "an excellent gift for an 18th birthday."

**Watch out when they turn 18:** if a child turns 18 and there are already 2 adults in the Family, the child is **automatically removed** on their birthday. Transfer any remaining miles from the child to the Leader before that date.

## Strategy: when to pool miles?

Measured among SkyStatus members: **21.6%** of members who imported their statements have moved miles within a Flying Blue Family pool (195 of 901 members, October 2026). Points transfers from a bank, card or hotel program are far rarer: fewer than one in twenty members have made one (18 members with such a transfer).

### When Flying Blue Family makes sense

- **You both have miles but not enough per person** - combine 40,000 + 35,000 miles into a 75,000-mile balance toward a future Business Class award
- **Children travel with you** - the 25% discount on award tickets can save thousands of miles per trip
- **Miles are about to expire** - after each transfer, all Flying Blue Family Miles are valid for two years. Official materials do not settle whether the Leader's non-expiry exemptions (status, co-brand Amex) override that Family rule, so plan around the two-year date
- **Promo Rewards** - [quick availability](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-sweet-spots>) during monthly promotions requires a ready pool of miles
- **Both of you [earn miles](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/how-to-earn-flying-blue-miles>) through credit cards** - both partners earn miles that can be combined through the Family when needed

### When keeping miles separate is better

- **You always book independently** - if each person has enough miles for their own bookings, pooling adds little value
- **One partner has status, the other does not** - miles never expire at [Silver](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-silver-status>) or above. After each transfer, all Flying Blue Family Miles are valid for two years. Flying Blue's public Family page does not explain how that rule interacts with non-expiry exemptions, so plan around the two-year date
- **The relationship is uncertain** - transfers are permanent and the lock-in period is 6 months

Strategy: only transfer what you need

The golden rule is: **only transfer miles when you have a specific booking in mind**. Transfer just the amount you need, not the full balance. This limits how many miles the Family rule applies to while it stays unclear how that rule interacts with the non-expiry exemptions, and gives you maximum flexibility.

### Combination with credit cards

A credit card that earns Flying Blue miles is an excellent complement to the Family. Both partners can have their own card and earn miles on everyday spending. Through the Family, those miles are combined when needed for a booking. This is more effective than requesting a supplementary card on the same account.

Still a few thousand miles short after pooling? Check [whether buying the rest pays off](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/should-you-buy-flying-blue-miles>) before you pay the standard price.

### Track your miles and plan family bookings

Import your Flying Blue monthly statement and see exactly how many miles you have, when they expire, and what you can book.

## Common mistakes and pitfalls

### 1\. Transferring miles in the wrong direction

The most common mistake: a user on a frequent flyer forum accidentally transferred miles to the wrong account. Because transfers are permanent, they were stuck for 6 months. **Always double-check** which account you are transferring to.

### 2\. Underestimating the 6-month lock-in

Once you join a Family, you are committed for a **minimum of 6 months**. You cannot leave earlier and cannot be removed earlier. The terms set no extra waiting period after leaving; check the current terms before you switch Families. Think carefully before adding someone or joining yourself.

### 3\. Transferring all miles at once

Do not blindly transfer your entire balance. After transfer, the Family rule applies: **all Flying Blue Family Miles are valid for two years**. Official materials do not settle whether your own non-expiry exemptions override that rule, so plan around the two-year date. Only transfer what you need for a specific booking.

### 4\. Forgetting to transfer miles before a child's 18th birthday

If a child turns 18 and the Family already has 2 adults, the child is automatically removed. Make sure any miles belonging to the child are transferred to the Leader before that date.

### 5\. The risk if the Family Leader dies

**Family account dissolution if the Leader dies (art. 4.6.2 of the terms):** if the Family Leader dies, the entire Family account is **dissolved** and **all previously transferred miles are cancelled**. This is a significant and often overlooked risk. Miles transferred from members to the Leader's account do not return to the original members. Factor this in when deciding how many miles to transfer and when. Only transfer what you need for a specific booking.

## Comparison with other programs

| Feature | Flying Blue Family | Miles & More (Lufthansa) | BA Household |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Max members | **8** (2+6) | 7 (2+5) | 7 |
| Cost | Free | Free | Free |
| Proof of address? | No | No | No (since 2021) |
| Miles pooling | Manual (Leader) | Automatic | Automatic |
| Status sharing? | No | No | No |
| **Child discount on awards** | **25% (ages 2-11)** | No | No |
| **Miles never expire (kids)** | **Until age 18** | Standard rules | Standard rules |
| Geographic restriction | None | EU/EEA plus Switzerland and other listed countries | None |
| Lock-in | 6 months | Varies | 6-month minimum per added member (FAQ); non-primary members may request removal at any time (art. 18.1.6) |

Flying Blue Family wins on **child benefits**: the 25% award discount and non-expiring miles for minors are unique. The manual transfer system is less convenient than the automatic pooling of Lufthansa and BA, but gives the Leader full control over when and how many miles are combined. Miles & More publishes its Mileage Pooling terms behind a login, so the figures in that column could not be checked against an official source for this update.

## Frequently asked questions

Is Flying Blue Family free?

Yes, completely free. No setup fees, no annual fees, no fees per transfer. This is a major advantage over the **paid miles transfer** that Flying Blue also offers (EUR 3 per 250 miles).

Can you share XP through Flying Blue Family?

No. [XP](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/what-is-flying-blue-xp>) cannot be shared or transferred. XP always stays with the member who earned it. Flying Blue Family applies only to miles. Each family member must earn their own XP for [status qualification](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-status-levels>).

Do Family members need to be actual relatives?

The official terms mention "family members", but **no proof** of family relationship or shared address is required. You only need the first name, last name, and Flying Blue number of the other person. In practice, it works regardless of the actual family relationship.

How many members can a Flying Blue Family have?

A maximum of **8 members**: 2 adults (18+) and 6 children (under 18). The Family Leader counts as one of the 2 adults.

What happens when you leave a Flying Blue Family?

You can only leave after a minimum of **6 months**. The terms set no extra waiting period after leaving; check the current terms before you switch Families. Miles that have already been transferred to the Leader stay with the Leader - transfers are permanent. Miles that were not transferred remain in your own account.
