# What Are Flying Blue Miles Worth?

Last updated: 24 October 2026 · 12 min read · Based on [official Flying Blue data](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/spend/flights/rewards>) and industry benchmarks · [See sources](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-miles-value#sources>)

By [Remco de Graaf](<https://skystatus.pro/about>) Founder of SkyStatus, Flying Blue member since 2005, currently Ultimate. Also Managing Director and co-owner at Reshift Digital. Founder of Zoom.nl (120,000 users) and Zoom Academy (80,000 paying students). Experience includes at least 15 mileage runs and visits to at least 60 countries.

## Valuation Summary

Flying Blue miles are worth **EUR 0.01 to 0.02 per mile** on flights. Across all redemption types, the envelope runs 0.4 to 3.0 euro cents, with rare outliers on both ends. Economy redemptions average EUR 0.008 to 0.012 per mile. Business Class averages EUR 0.015 to 0.025. The SkyStatus reference value is **EUR 0.012 per mile**. The 2026 US benchmarks bracket it. The Points Guy says 1.4 US cents (October 2026, down from 1.55 in July). The Point Calculator has it at 1.2 US cents (April 2026). The [NerdWallet](<https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/travel/flying-blue-miles-value>) median is 0.8 US cents, measured on real Economy bookings. Our reference sits deliberately in the middle of that range. A well-chosen mix of redemptions gets you there.

A Flying Blue mile has no fixed price. The same mile can buy a long-haul Business seat. It can also buy a discount voucher worth a fraction of that. The gap between those two outcomes is the whole game. Most members redeem on instinct and never check whether they got a good deal. This guide shows you what your miles are actually worth. You will see how that number swings with cabin and route. And you will learn to tell a strong redemption from a wasted one before you book.

### Measured: what members actually got

The benchmarks above are estimates. SkyStatus members import their real Flying Blue statements, so we can measure outcomes instead of estimating them. The measured picture across members' flown, cash-valued redemptions: **median 0.83 euro cents per redeemed mile (p25 0.50, p75 1.60), recorded redemptions with a past travel date, EUR-profile members**. Against our planning value, 36.9% of those redemptions meet or beat EUR 0.012 per mile. The middle half of real redemptions spans roughly a threefold range, so cabin and route choice, not the average, decide whether your miles beat the benchmark.

_SkyStatus member data, October 2026, based on the flown redemptions of 62 members. Our members are self-selected optimizers, not a random sample of Flying Blue members._

## Calculate what your miles are worth

The values above are averages. What your miles are actually worth depends on your balance, your destination, and how you redeem them.

### Good Value: EUR 0.012 to 0.02 per mile

**Business Class within Europe** at 20,000 miles one-way when cash fares run EUR 400 to EUR 700.

**Premium Economy long-haul** when cash prices are high.

**Transatlantic saver awards** at 60,000 miles when cash fares exceed EUR 1,500.

### Fair Value: EUR 0.008 to 0.012 per mile

**Economy long-haul** on regular award pricing.

**Economy within Europe** on medium-distance routes.

### Poor Value: Under EUR 0.008 per mile

**Short-haul Economy** when cheap cash fares are available.

**Non-flight redemptions** (shopping at 0.002 to 0.004/mile, hotels at 0.004 to 0.006/mile).

**Miles + Cash options** (unless heavily discounted).

**Peak dynamic pricing** at 150,000+ miles for routes normally costing 60,000.

## How Much Are Your Miles Worth in Dollars and Euros?

"KLM miles" and "Air France miles" are the same currency: Flying Blue miles, one program for both airlines plus Transavia. One rate never fits every redemption. So this table prices each balance three honest ways in euros, plus The Points Guy's October 2026 benchmark in dollars.

| Miles | Floor Value (EUR 0.004) | Typical Flight (EUR 0.012) | Good Business Deal (EUR 0.020) | TPG Benchmark (1.4 US cents) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1,000 | EUR 4 | EUR 12 | EUR 20 | $14 |
| 5,000 | EUR 20 | EUR 60 | EUR 100 | $70 |
| 10,000 | EUR 40 | EUR 120 | EUR 200 | $140 |
| 25,000 | EUR 100 | EUR 300 | EUR 500 | $350 |
| 44,000 | EUR 176 | EUR 528 | EUR 880 | $616 |
| 50,000 | EUR 200 | EUR 600 | EUR 1,000 | $700 |
| 100,000 | EUR 400 | EUR 1,200 | EUR 2,000 | $1,400 |
| 200,000 | EUR 800 | EUR 2,400 | EUR 4,000 | $2,800 |

The math is simple multiplication on the rates named above. The floor is what the weakest non-flight redemptions pay. The typical column uses our EUR 0.012 reference. The Business column reflects a good long-haul redemption, not the record. For everyday Economy bookings, NerdWallet measured about 0.8 US cents per mile (February 2026 update). On that basis, 50,000 miles are worth about $400.

## Current Award Pricing (2026)

Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing. The same route can cost vastly different amounts depending on demand. Below are the minimum "saver" rates, which are now Light prices. The long-haul floors have held since January 2025, the Europe floors since September 2026. Source: [Flying Blue reward tickets](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/spend/flights/rewards>).

**From September 8, 2026** the displayed miles price additionally depends on the fare option. Every new award on Air France and KLM flights comes as [Light, Standard or Flex](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-light-standard-flex>): Light matches the lowest price point but drops the checked bag in Economy and Premium Economy, plus all voluntary changes and refunds, Standard roughly matches the old conditions for more miles, and Flex charges the most miles with a lower cash surcharge. Compute your value per mile against the option you would actually book, not against the cheapest number on the screen.

### Transatlantic (Europe to North America)

| Cabin Class | Saver Rate (One-Way) | With Promo Reward (25% off) | Peak Pricing Range |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Economy | 25,000 miles | 18,750 miles | 40,000 to 80,000+ |
| Premium Economy | 40,000 miles | 30,000 miles | 60,000 to 120,000+ |
| Business Class | 60,000 miles | 45,000 miles | 100,000 to 200,000+ |

### Measured: what SkyStatus members actually paid for award journeys to North America

The table shows the lowest prices: the saver rate (the floor price) and the Promo Reward price. But how often do you actually pay them? Of the award journeys between Europe and North America (Mexico included) that SkyStatus members have booked since February 2025, **59.1%** cost exactly a floor price or a Promo price. All other journeys cost a different, dynamic price. The median price was 45,000 miles per passenger, across all cabins.

_SkyStatus member data, October 2026, based on 301 journeys by 75 members, with each passenger counted separately, from their own Flying Blue statements. The statement does not show the cabin, so we identify a floor price by its exact amount. Our members are self-selected optimizers, not a random sample of Flying Blue members._

KLM's own booking site shows how wide the gap can be on a single route. For a one-way Business trip from Amsterdam to New York in mid-January 2027, the cheapest flight cost 60,000 miles five days in a row and 240,000 on the Sunday and Monday that followed. On Friday 15 January one direct flight cost 205,000 miles and the other 60,000. Always check the whole week, and every flight on a given day.

![klm.nl, award from Amsterdam to New York in Business: 60,000 miles Tuesday to Saturday, 240,000 on Sunday and Monday, 205,000 or 60,000 per flight on Friday](/guide/images/award-prices-klm-ams-jfk-business-202610.webp?v=c98942b97c1edab8)

Retrieved from klm.nl (English) on 6 October 2026: Amsterdam to New York, Business, one way, departures 12 to 18 January 2027.

### Long-Haul Asia (Europe to Japan, Thailand, Singapore)

| Cabin Class | Saver Rate (One-Way) | With Promo Reward (25% off) | Peak Pricing Range |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Economy | 30,000 miles | 22,500 miles | 40,000 to 90,000+ |
| Business Class | 85,000 miles | 63,750 miles | 120,000 to 200,000+ |

These floor prices are not limited to Asia. On klm.nl in October 2026, the same floor prices applied to one-way trips to Nairobi, São Paulo, Curaçao and Réunion (from Paris).

### Measured: what SkyStatus members paid for award journeys to long-haul destinations

The 85,000-mile Business floor price first appeared in members' statements in May 2025, so we count from June 2025. From that month on, **46.6%** of their award journeys between Europe and Asia, Africa, South America, the Caribbean or Indian Ocean islands cost exactly a floor or Promo price. For 26.7% of all journeys, members paid exactly the 85,000-mile Business floor price.

_SkyStatus member data, October 2026, based on 281 journeys by 69 members, with each passenger counted separately. Our members are self-selected optimizers, not a random sample of Flying Blue members._

What SkyStatus members have paid per passenger for an award journey between Europe and Asia, Africa, South America, the Caribbean or Indian Ocean islands since June 2025. Blue marks an exact floor price, orange an exact Promo price.

The same search for Tokyo looked very different: Business cost exactly the 85,000-mile floor price seven days in a row.

![klm.nl, award from Amsterdam to Tokyo in Business: 85,000 miles seven days in a row, including the direct KLM flight at the floor price](/guide/images/award-prices-klm-ams-nrt-business-202610.webp?v=f421cc71b29b4cd4)

### Intra-Europe (Short-Haul)

| Cabin Class | Saver Rate (One-Way) | With Promo Reward (25% off) | Peak Pricing Range |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Economy | 8,000 miles | 6,000 miles | 15,000 to 30,000+ |
| Business Class | 20,000 miles | 15,000 miles | 40,000 to 80,000+ |

One caution on the promo column: it shows 25% off the saver floor. A real Promo Reward discounts each route's own base price, which can sit above that floor. October 2026 example: Bogota and Cape Town in Business were 63,750 miles in the promo list, exactly 25% off the 85,000 floor.

Measured among SkyStatus members: within Europe, the median price paid over the last 24 months was 13,000 miles per passenger, across all cabins (159 members, October 2026).

**Dynamic Pricing Alert:** The saver rates above are minimums. On popular routes or dates, expect to pay 2 to 3 times these amounts. A New York to Paris Business Class seat can cost 60,000 miles on a Tuesday in February. The same seat can hit 180,000 miles on a Friday in July. Always compare before booking.

### Promo Reward Route Prices (October 2026)

These are live promo prices from the official Flying Blue Promo Rewards page, read on 6 October 2026. The US, Dutch, French and German pages showed the same selection. Since September 2026, the Promo price has been the price of the Light fare. A new set appears on the first day of each month. Long-haul promo fares apply between Europe and the destination in either direction. Connecting flights within Europe through Paris or Amsterdam are included. Taxes and surcharges stay payable in cash.

| Route | Cabin | Promo Miles (One-Way, October 2026) | Pool |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| New York to Mauritius | Economy | 30,000 | Public |
| Seattle to/from Europe | Business | 45,000 | Public |
| Mexico City to/from Europe | Business | 45,000 | Public |

| Europe to/from Cape Town | Business | 63,750 | Public |
| Amsterdam to Dublin | Economy | 6,000 | Public |
| Amsterdam to Lisbon | Business | 15,000 | Public |

"Extra Exclusive" rows require a [Flying Blue Extra](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-subscription>) subscription. We print promo prices only. Each route in the October set is 25% off its own Light price, so the regular price is the promo figure divided by 0.75 (30,000 becomes 40,000). Check the [official Promo Rewards page](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/flights/promo-rewards>) for the current month's live set.

### Redemption Value Examples

| Route | Class | Miles (Saver, One-Way) | Cash Price (One-Way) | Value per Mile |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AMS to New York | Business | 60,000 | EUR 1,500 to EUR 3,000 | EUR 0.025 to 0.050 |
| AMS to New York | Economy | 25,000 | EUR 350 to EUR 600 | EUR 0.014 to 0.024 |
| CDG to Tokyo | Business | 85,000 | EUR 1,800 to EUR 3,500 | EUR 0.021 to 0.041 |
| CDG to Bangkok | Business | 85,000 | EUR 1,500 to EUR 2,800 | EUR 0.018 to 0.033 |
| AMS to Barcelona | Business | 20,000 | EUR 400 to EUR 700 | EUR 0.020 to 0.035 |
| AMS to Barcelona | Economy | 8,000 | EUR 80 to EUR 200 | EUR 0.010 to 0.025 |
| AMS to New York (when on Promo) | Business | 45,000 | EUR 1,500 to EUR 3,000 | EUR 0.033 to 0.067 |

Cash prices shown are typical fares on KLM and Air France. Peak prices (Christmas, summer, school breaks) are higher, which increases the value per mile. On popular dates the same route can cost significantly more in miles due to dynamic pricing.

![SkyStatus chart What each mile returned: YYZ just above 3 ct per mile, two last-minute upgrades about 0.7 ct, dashed average cost line 0.15 ct.](/guide/images/value-per-mile-chart-202610.webp?v=99391195d877d1dd)

My awards ranked by value per mile: a Business award to Toronto (YYZ) returned just over 3 cents per mile, two last-minute upgrades about 0.7 cents. The dashed line is what my miles cost to collect, 0.15 cents.

**Pro Tip:** The best value comes from finding saver-level Business Class during peak travel seasons. If cash fares are EUR 3,000 and you pay 60,000 miles, you get EUR 0.05 per mile. That is four times the reference value. Note: these are **outliers**, not typical redemptions.

## Promo Rewards: Up to 25% Off

Every month, Flying Blue publishes [Promo Rewards](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-promo-rewards>) offering up to 25% off the miles price of awards on select routes. This is one of the best ways to maximize mile value. See the [Flying Blue Promo Rewards page](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/flights/promo-rewards>).

### How Promo Rewards Work

- Released on the first day of each month.
- Official discount: up to 25%, on the miles portion only (never on taxes and surcharges).
- Valid for bookings within that month, travel window usually 3 to 6 months ahead.
- Since September 2026, the Promo price has been the price of the Light fare.
- **All cabins** can appear in the public selection, Business Class included (October 2026: Seattle and Mexico City to/from Europe in Business at 45,000 miles one-way).
- **[Flying Blue Extra](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-subscription>) subscribers:** additional subscriber-only Promo Rewards marked "Extra Exclusive" (from EUR 379/year).

A Business Class promo is worth real money. The gap between 60,000 and 45,000 miles is 15,000 miles. At an acquisition cost of EUR 0.011 per mile, that is EUR 165 saved on one booking. The public pool alone delivers that: the October Seattle Business promo needs no subscription. [Flying Blue Extra (EUR 379/year) earns itself back](<https://skystatus.pro/tools/fb-extra>) only if you book from its Exclusive pool a few times a year, on top of the public set.

**Watch out:** Promo Rewards are popular and saver availability on Promo routes is limited. Book as early as possible after publication on the first day of the month. [More on finding award availability](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-award-availability>).

**Combination Strategy (US):** Wait for a credit card transfer bonus (20-30%), move your points to Flying Blue, then book a Promo Reward. Stacked, the two discounts can push value past EUR 0.04 per mile. That is an outlier, not a typical result. The most recent bonus, 25% from Amex, ended June 30, 2026.

## How to Earn Miles

The value of your miles depends not only on what you redeem them for, but also on what you paid to acquire them. The lower your acquisition cost, the more easily any redemption becomes worthwhile.

### 1\. Credit Card Transfer Partners (primary method)

Most miles come from bank programs, not from flying. Flying Blue connects to [all six major US transferable-points currencies](<https://skystatus.pro/tools/transfer-partners>), plus newcomer Rove. Seven programs transfer at 1:1:

- **American Express Membership Rewards** (1:1 in the US and the UK). Continental European Amex ratios differ, for example 2:1 in the Netherlands since July 2026.
- **[Chase Ultimate Rewards](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/chase-to-flying-blue-transfer>)** (1:1).
- **Citi ThankYou Points** (1:1).
- **Capital One Miles** (1:1).
- **Bilt Rewards** (1:1).
- **Wells Fargo Rewards** (1:1, partner since April 2024).
- **Rove Miles** (1:1, the newest entrant, since 2025).

HSBC USA also transfers, at a weaker ratio. Marriott Bonvoy converts at 3:1. Full details per program are in the [transfer partners guide](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-transfer-partners>).

Transfer bonuses of 20 to 30% appear several times a year, from rotating issuers. Frequent Miler's bonus history has Flying Blue as the most frequently bonused airline program. From any single issuer, expect one or two windows a year. The most recent one, 25% from Amex, ran through June 30, 2026. A 25% bonus turns 100,000 credit card points into 125,000 miles. That cuts your effective [cost per mile](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-cost-per-mile>) by a fifth. European Amex programs do not run these bonuses, so plan with the base ratio for your market. Track current offers in the [transfer bonus tracker](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-transfer-bonuses>).

### Reading from the UK or Canada?

Amex UK transfers Membership Rewards to Flying Blue at 1:1, verified on the UK Amex partner page (September 2026). European Amex programs skip the US-style transfer bonuses. Weighing Flying Blue against Avios? Avios wins cheap short-haul hops with its distance pricing. Flying Blue wins transatlantic Business, with lower fees than BA charges on its own premium awards. One more thing: the capitalized "Air Miles" program in Canada and the Netherlands is a separate scheme, not Flying Blue.

### 2\. Air France KLM Visa Signature Card (US co-brand)

The United States has its own Flying Blue co-brand card. Bank of America rebranded its Air France KLM card to a Visa Signature in early 2026, at $89 per year. It earns 3 Miles per dollar on Air France, KLM and SkyTeam purchases, 3 per dollar on dining, and 1.5 on everything else. A current promotion adds 3 Miles per dollar on rent paid through Bilt, up to $50,000 a year. As of July 2026, the welcome offer is 50,000 Miles plus 100 XP after $2,000 of spending in the first 90 days. Those 100 XP hand you instant [Silver status](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-status-levels>). The card also adds 5,000 Miles every anniversary, and up to 160 XP per year. One quiet perk: co-brand cardholders' miles never expire.

### 3\. Subscribe to Miles (monthly subscription)

Flying Blue offers a [monthly miles subscription](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/mileshub/subscription>). The Complete plan delivers 17,000 miles per month for EUR 187. That works out to **EUR 0.011 per mile**, cheaper than buying miles even with the best promotion. Complete+, added in October 2026, delivers 30,000 miles for EUR 330 at the same EUR 0.011 per mile. US members pay in dollars through Points.com: the same Complete plan runs $227.80 per month, about 1.34 US cents per mile (AwardWallet, 2026). On Flying Blue's own US price list Complete+ costs $402.00 a month, the same rate per mile. The minimum commitment is 3 months. After that, it runs month to month and you can cancel anytime. Since May 4, 2026, each monthly credit counts as an [eligible activity](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-miles-expiration>) that extends your entire miles balance by 24 months. The downside: it takes months to accumulate enough for a Business Class award.

| Plan | Miles per Month | Price per Month | Cost per Mile |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Starter | 2,000 | EUR 28 | EUR 0.0140 |
| Smart | 5,000 | EUR 65 | EUR 0.0130 |
| Advanced | 10,000 | EUR 120 | EUR 0.0120 |
| Complete | 17,000 | EUR 187 | EUR 0.0110 |
| Complete+ | 30,000 | EUR 330 | EUR 0.0110 |

### 4\. Buying Miles with Promo Discount

Flying Blue runs buy-miles promotions six to eight times a year, with a 45% discount or an 80% bonus. At the best offers you pay approximately **EUR 0.014 per mile**, about 1.7 US cents. The July 2026 round (through July 28) followed exactly that pattern. Without a promotion, the base price is EUR 0.026 per mile, or 3.05 US cents. That base price is almost never worth paying. [More about buying miles](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/should-you-buy-flying-blue-miles>).

**Only buy with a plan:** Buying miles only makes sense if you already have a specific redemption in mind, preferably Business Class. For Economy redemptions, the value per mile is often lower than the purchase price, even with discounts.

**Accelerate Miles** is the quieter third way to buy miles. Once per calendar month, you can buy a multiple (2x to 16x) of the miles you earned the previous month. The unit price is EUR 0.016, or 2.0 US cents (price check, October 2025). That is 38% below the regular buy-miles base price. The catch: the cap depends on your own earning, so it cannot replace an earning strategy.

### 5\. RevPoints (Revolut)

RevPoints from [Revolut](<https://www.flyingblue.com/en/earn/partners/financial-services-revolut>) transfer 1:1 to Flying Blue miles. The earning rate depends on your Revolut plan. The free plan earns 1 point per EUR 10 of spending, so a single mile takes EUR 10 of card spend. Only the Ultra plan (EUR 60/month) earns 1 point per euro, comparable to a co-branded credit card. [Full RevPoints guide](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/revolut-revpoints-flying-blue>).

### 6\. Flying (flight miles)

Miles earned from flying are effectively free, a byproduct of travel you already booked. The amount depends on your fare class, route distance, and [elite status](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-status-levels>). Higher status means higher earning multipliers. For active collectors, flight miles are usually a small fraction of the total.

## Acquisition Costs Compared

This table compares all earning methods sorted from cheapest to most expensive. The cost per mile is also your break-even threshold: a redemption must yield at least that much per mile to be worth it.

![SkyStatus Miles by source, 1 Nov 2025 to 31 Oct 2026: subscriptions and tools 1.10 ct per mile, cards 0.051 ct, flights no acquisition cost.](/guide/images/miles-by-source-202610.webp?v=7b2c55e39f4e668b)

Miles by source sets the recorded cost per mile of each source against my valuation of 2.50 cents. Subscriptions come out at 1.10 cents per mile, flight miles carry no acquisition cost at all.

| Method | Cost per Mile (EUR) | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Flying (flight miles) | EUR 0.000 | Free byproduct of flying |
| Credit card points (optimal) | ~EUR 0.005 to 0.010 | Depends on card annual fee and spending volume |
| Transfer with 25% bonus | ~EUR 0.004 to 0.008 | Reduces effective cost of credit card points |
| Subscribe to Miles (Complete, Complete+) | EUR 0.011 | Cheapest direct purchase method |
| Subscribe to Miles (Starter) | EUR 0.014 | Entry-level subscription |
| Buying miles (80% bonus promo) | EUR 0.014 | Promotion, 6 to 8 times a year |
| Buying miles (45% discount promo) | EUR 0.014 | Promotion, alternating with bonus offers |
| Accelerate Miles (monthly multiplier) | EUR 0.016 | Capped at a multiple of last month's earning |
| Buying miles (no promotion) | EUR 0.026 | Almost never worthwhile |

Credit card costs are estimates based on annual card fee divided by miles earned. The miles themselves are a "free" byproduct of spending. The annual fee is the only direct cost. Learn more in the [cost per mile guide](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-cost-per-mile>).

**Rule of thumb:** If your miles acquisition cost is below EUR 0.012 (via credit card or Subscribe to Miles), virtually any Business Class redemption is profitable. At an acquisition cost of EUR 0.014 (buying miles with a promotion), you need at least a good Economy or Business redemption to break even.

## Factors That Affect Value

### 1\. Cabin Class (biggest impact)

Business and First Class redemptions almost always give better per-mile value. Cash prices for those cabins are disproportionately high compared to award prices. Concrete example, before the taxes and surcharges you still pay on the award:

- **Economy AMS to NYC:** 25,000 miles for a ticket worth EUR 400 = EUR 0.016/mile.
- **Business AMS to NYC:** 60,000 miles for a ticket worth EUR 2,400 = EUR 0.040/mile.

You pay 2.4x more miles for Business, but the cash ticket is 6x more expensive. That ratio makes Business Class structurally the best award deal.

### 2\. Timing and Season

Award prices at saver level are semi-fixed, but cash prices fluctuate dramatically. This creates a clear pattern:

- **Best value:** Book awards for travel during Christmas (Dec 20 to Jan 7), summer break (Jul-Aug), fall break, and spring break. Cash prices peak then, but saver awards stay the same.
- **Moderate value:** Shoulder season (May-June, September-October). Cash prices are reasonable, awards are easier to find.
- **Worst value:** Off-season (Jan-Mar outside school breaks). Cash Economy tickets to New York can drop below EUR 300. A 25,000-mile redemption is then worth only EUR 0.012 per mile.

The sweet spot: book in the shoulder season, when saver space is easier to find. Then **travel** in peak season, when each mile buys the most.

### 3\. Dynamic Pricing

The gap is not subtle: the same Business seat can cost 60,000 miles one week and 180,000 the next. Use the [Air France booking tool](<https://www.airfrance.com/>) or the [KLM booking tool](<https://www.klm.com/>) to find saver dates. Search with the monthly calendar view. Look for the cheapest dates, marked in green. The more flexible your dates, the more often you will find saver rates.

SkyStatus member data shows a gap by departure day. For departures on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, **63.5%** of award journeys cost exactly a floor or Promo price, compared with 44.3% on other days (SkyStatus members' award journeys to North America and long-haul destinations, October 2026).

### 4\. Booking Window

NerdWallet analyzed 80 real Economy bookings (February 2026 update) and found a striking pattern. The value per mile is higher at shorter booking windows. Booking 15 days out yields an average of 1.2 US cents per mile. Booking 180 days ahead yields only 0.8 cents.

The explanation is simple. Cash fares rise as departure approaches, while award prices stay relatively stable. **Practical advice:** for Economy awards, you do not need to book months ahead. For Business Class saver, the opposite holds: those seats disappear quickly. Book Business awards 3 to 6 months ahead for the best shot at saver availability.

SkyStatus members' statements point the same way. The share of journeys to North America and other long-haul destinations at exactly a floor or Promo price was highest for bookings made 2 to 6 months before departure. Treat this as an indication, not a firm result: the smallest group in that comparison has 28 members (October 2026).

### 5\. Elite Status

[Platinum](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-platinum-status>) and [Ultimate](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-ultimate-status>) members see more saver availability than non-elite members. It is one of the lesser-known benefits. Flying Blue reserves a portion of saver seats for elites. In practice, a Platinum member finds saver seats on popular routes that stay invisible to Silver or Explorer members. That alone can be the difference between 60,000 miles (saver) and 120,000 miles (dynamic) for the same seat.

Measured among SkyStatus members: of the award journeys to North America and other long-haul destinations booked by members who were Platinum or Ultimate when they joined SkyStatus, **58.9%** cost exactly a floor or Promo price. For other members it was 46% (October 2026). Part of that gap probably comes down to experience: Platinum and Ultimate members tend to book more often and know where to look.

![Share of SkyStatus members' award journeys at exactly a floor or Promo price, by departure day and by status](/guide/images/award-floor-share-factors-en.svg?v=8910e755d1e8dec2)

A higher share of award journeys cost exactly a floor or Promo price when they departed Tuesday to Thursday, or when the member had Platinum or Ultimate status. Measured across SkyStatus members' award journeys to North America and long-haul destinations.

### 6\. Route Competition

Routes with heavy competition have cheaper cash fares, making awards less valuable. Monopoly routes and premium services give better award value:

- **High award value:** Paris to Papeete (little competition, high cash fares), Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro (KLM exclusive), long-haul Business during peak season.
- **Low award value:** Amsterdam to Barcelona (10+ airlines), Paris to New York (fierce competition), any route where Ryanair or easyJet operates.

### 7\. Taxes, Fees, and Departure Direction

Award tickets charge taxes and carrier surcharges in cash, and the promo discount never touches them. Where you depart decides how much. An October 2025 survey by Frequent Miler priced a one-way Business award to New York at about $489 in taxes and fees from Paris, $383 from Amsterdam, and only $241 in the other direction, departing New York. Air France and KLM raised award surcharges again in April 2026, now capped in premium cabins.

The reason is structural. France tripled its solidarity tax (TSBA) in March 2025, and it hits departures from France only. US departure taxes are modest: the September 11 security fee is $5.60 and the international departure tax about $23. So the same award is cheapest to start in the US.

Run the net math before booking: value = (cash price - award fees) / miles. Take a 60,000-mile Business seat that sells for $3,000 cash. Ex-New York it nets ($3,000 - $241) / 60,000 = 4.6 US cents per mile. Ex-Paris the same seat nets 4.2 cents. For US-based members, Flying Blue is at its best on ex-US departures, or on partner metal with low surcharges, like [Delta](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/use-flying-blue-miles-on-delta>).

**Quick Valuation Check:** Before redeeming, divide the cash price by the miles required. If the result exceeds EUR 0.012, it is a reasonable redemption. Above EUR 0.02 is excellent. Below EUR 0.008, you should pay cash instead.

## When NOT to Redeem Miles

![SkyStatus Miles Calculator deal check, AMS to BCN one way in Economy, cash price €80: Don't do it, 0.4 ct of value per mile after taxes.](/guide/images/miles-value-deal-check-bcn-202610.webp?v=18d7048f57dc14c9)

The Miles Calculator checks 10,000 miles for a one-way Economy seat from Amsterdam to Barcelona that sells for EUR 80. With EUR 40 in award taxes, each mile returns 0.4 cents. Verdict: Don't do it.

- **Very cheap cash fares:** If AMS to Barcelona costs EUR 80, do not spend 8,000 miles in Light. After about EUR 40 in award taxes, that is EUR 0.005 per mile, below your acquisition cost.
- **Peak dynamic pricing:** If Business Class shows 180,000 miles when saver is 60,000, wait for better availability or pay cash.
- **Short-haul Economy during sales:** Airlines frequently discount short-haul fares below EUR 100. Miles cannot match that.

### Non-Flight Redemptions: Almost Always Poor Value

Flying Blue offers various non-flight options. None of them compete with [flight redemptions](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/how-to-spend-flying-blue-miles>). The verdicts:

| Redemption | Typical Value per Mile | Verdict |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Flight awards (saver level) | EUR 0.012 to 0.025 | The benchmark. Book these. |
| Shopping via the Flying Blue Store | EUR 0.002 to 0.004 | Worst value. Avoid. |
| Paying for hotels with miles | EUR 0.004 to 0.006 | Weak. Only for expiring miles. |
| Gift cards | EUR 0.003 to 0.005 | Avoid. |
| Car rental | EUR 0.004 to 0.007 | Weak. |
| Miles + Cash | Low, well below a full award | Last resort when just short of an award. |
| Selling miles to a broker | ~1 to 1.4 US cents advertised | Never. Against the program rules. |

The shopping, hotel, gift card and car rental options top out at EUR 0.007 per mile, far below the EUR 0.012 reference. Use them only if your miles are about to expire and no flight works. Read more about [preventing miles expiration](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-family-account>).

**Do not confuse paying for hotels with "Hotels for Miles".** Hotels for Miles is an earning product. The official partner page advertises up to 10,000 Miles earned per night, and up to 1,000,000 Miles per booking. Booking hotels there earns miles. Paying a hotel bill with miles is the weak EUR 0.004 to 0.006 redemption in the table above.

### Should You Sell Your Miles to a Broker?

No. Mile brokers rank high in Google for this exact question, and their pitch hides the math. Brokers advertise around 1 to 1.4 US cents per mile, and the real quote often lands lower. A decent Business redemption beats that on your own, at 1.5 to 2.5 euro cents or more. Selling also breaks the Flying Blue terms: miles cannot be sold or transferred for compensation. Flying Blue audits suspicious redemptions and can close the account, void the miles, and cancel tickets bought with them. The honest move when your balance feels stuck: book a Promo Reward, share via [Flying Blue Family](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-family-account>), or let a small balance ride until the next promo round.

### Miles + Cash: Do the Math

With Miles + Cash, you pay up to 45% of a ticket with miles, in 5% increments. The value per mile is structurally poor, **well below what a regular award ticket returns**. One advantage: Miles + Cash bookings count as cash tickets. You still earn XP on the flight, and miles on the part you pay in cash. Use it only when you are just short of a full award and the route has no saver availability.

If you are considering [buying Flying Blue miles](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/should-you-buy-flying-blue-miles>), make sure your planned redemption yields better value than your acquisition cost. See the [acquisition cost table](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-miles-value#acquisition-costs>) above.

## Maximizing Your Mile Value

1. **Target premium cabins:** Business Class offers the best value proposition, especially on long-haul routes.
2. **Use Promo Rewards:** Check the first of each month for discounted awards. With Flying Blue Extra you also get the subscriber-only "Extra Exclusive" Promos.
3. **Wait for transfer bonuses (US):** A 20-30% bonus from a rotating issuer effectively gives you free miles.
4. **Book peak travel:** Redeem when cash prices spike during holidays, events, and summer.
5. **Use Subscribe to Miles to top up:** If you are 10,000 miles short of an award, Subscribe to Miles (EUR 0.011/mile) is cheaper than buying.
6. **Avoid short-haul Economy:** Usually poor value unless using Promo Rewards.
7. **Calculate before booking:** Always do the math on value per mile. Above EUR 0.012 is good, above EUR 0.02 is excellent.
8. **Consider [partner airlines](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-partner-airlines>):** SkyTeam partners like Kenya Airways or Air Europa sometimes offer lower saver rates than KLM/Air France on comparable routes.
9. **Check [sweet spots](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-sweet-spots>):** Some routes structurally offer better value per mile than average.

### The Value Formula

**Value per Mile = Cash Price / Miles Required**.

Example: A Business Class ticket worth EUR 2,400 that costs 60,000 miles:

EUR 2,400 / 60,000 = **EUR 0.04 per mile**, before the taxes and surcharges you still pay on the award.

This is excellent value, well above the EUR 0.012 baseline. Learn more in the [Cost Per Mile guide](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-cost-per-mile>).

### What Can You Do With 15,000 to 200,000 Miles?

The same October 2026 prices, translated into what a balance actually buys. Cash anchors come from the examples table above.

| Balance | Best Move (at October 2026 Prices) | Approximate Value per Mile |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 15,000 | Two intra-Europe Economy one-ways at the 6,000 promo level (Amsterdam to Dublin or Vienna in October 2026), with 3,000 spare | EUR 0.013 to 0.033 |
| 25,000 | Transatlantic Economy saver one-way, or 18,750 with an October promo (Boston, Toronto, Montreal) | EUR 0.014 to 0.032 |
| 50,000 | Business promo one-way to/from Europe at 45,000 (Seattle or Mexico City in October 2026), with 5,000 spare | EUR 0.033 to 0.067 |
| 100,000 | Business transatlantic round trip on promo (2 x 45,000), the flagship play | EUR 0.033 to 0.067 |
| 200,000 | Two Business promo round trips, or three long-haul Business one-ways at 63,750 (Bogota or Cape Town in October 2026) | EUR 0.024 to 0.067 |

**The pattern:** one long-haul Business award beats several short Economy hops, at roughly twice the value per mile. If nothing on the list fits your plans, do not force it. Miles keep their value for the next promo round, as long as your account stays active.

## FAQ

How much are Flying Blue miles worth?

Flying Blue miles are worth approximately EUR 0.012 per mile on average. Economy redemptions typically yield EUR 0.008 to 0.012 per mile. Business Class can reach EUR 0.015 to 0.025. The value varies with route, timing, and cabin class.

What is the best way to use Flying Blue miles?

The best value comes from Business Class on long-haul flights. Peak season is best, because cash prices spike then. [Promo Rewards](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-miles-value#promo-rewards>) with discounts of up to 25% also deliver excellent value. Avoid non-flight redemptions like hotels or shopping.

How many miles for a transatlantic Business Class flight?

As of January 2025, transatlantic Business Class starts at 60,000 miles one-way at saver rates. With monthly Promo Rewards discounts (25% off), you can book for 45,000 miles. Peak pricing can reach 150,000+ miles.

Is EUR 0.04 per mile realistic or an outlier?

Values of EUR 0.04 to 0.06 per mile are achievable but are **outliers**, not the average. They occur when peak-season Business cash fares pass EUR 3,000 and you stack a Promo Reward or a transfer bonus. Most redemptions yield EUR 0.01 to 0.02 per mile.

Should I book now or wait for a Promo Reward?

It depends on your route and flexibility. Promo Rewards appear on the first day of each month and offer up to 25% off on selected routes. Popular routes like AMS to New York appear in the Promo selection about three to five times a year. If you are flexible on destination, wait. If you have a specific trip on fixed dates, book as soon as you find saver availability. It can disappear. See the [award availability guide](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-award-availability>) for more search tips.

Can I transfer miles to someone else?

Yes, via [Flying Blue Family](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-family-account>) you can share miles with up to eight members. This is free and counts as a validity-extending activity. Outside a Family account, you can buy miles as a gift for another account, but you cannot transfer directly. Tip: Flying Blue Family is also one of the cheapest ways to [prevent miles expiration](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-family-account>).

I see 150,000 miles for a flight that normally costs 60,000. What should I do?

This is dynamic pricing in action: Flying Blue shows higher prices on popular dates. Do **not** book this. At 150,000 miles for a route that normally costs 60,000, your value per mile is two and a half times lower. Instead, try different dates. Tuesday and Wednesday are often cheaper. Try another airport, CDG instead of AMS or the reverse. Check partner airlines via the [sweet spots guide](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-sweet-spots>). Or wait a week and check again. In SkyStatus member data, midweek departures stand out: of award journeys departing Tuesday to Thursday, 63.5% cost exactly a floor or Promo price, compared with 44.3% for departures on other days.

How does elite status affect mile value?

Higher status indirectly improves value because you see more saver availability. Platinum and Ultimate members have access to seats that are not visible to Explorer or Silver members. That means booking the 60,000-mile saver rate more often, instead of dynamic prices of 100,000+. With Gold or higher you also get [lounge access](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-lounge-access>). That improves the trip without costing extra miles. SkyStatus members' statements show a difference at the lowest prices: for members who were Platinum or Ultimate when they joined SkyStatus, 58.9% of award journeys to North America and other long-haul destinations cost exactly a floor or Promo price, compared with 46% for other members. Part of that gap probably comes down to experience.

How can I calculate what my Flying Blue miles are worth?

Use the free [**Miles Calculator**](<https://skystatus.pro/calculator>) on SkyStatus. Enter your miles balance and pick a travel scenario: Europe flight, long-haul Economy, or Business Class. You see which flights are within reach and what each mile is worth in your case. The calculator uses current award pricing and compares against cash fares. No login required.

How much are 10,000 Flying Blue points worth?

About EUR 120 at our EUR 0.012 reference value. In dollars: roughly $80 on NerdWallet's real-booking basis of 0.8 US cents, and $140 at The Points Guy's October 2026 benchmark of 1.4 cents. Points and miles are the same thing here. Flying Blue itself calls them Miles.

How much is 5,000 miles worth?

Around EUR 60 at the EUR 0.012 reference. On the US benchmarks: roughly $40 (NerdWallet basis) to $77.50 (TPG basis). That is short-haul Economy money, not a long-haul seat. Value climbs when you pool toward a Promo Reward or a Business award, where each mile can beat EUR 0.02.

How much is 50,000 air miles worth in dollars?

For Flying Blue: about $400 at NerdWallet's 0.8 US cents, or $700 at The Points Guy's 1.4 cents (October 2026). More useful: 50,000 miles nearly covers a 60,000-mile transatlantic Business saver. It clears the 45,000-mile Business promo level with room to spare. Note that capitalized "Air Miles" is a separate program in Canada and the Netherlands.

Can I sell my Flying Blue miles for cash?

You can find brokers who buy miles, but do not. Selling breaks the Flying Blue terms and conditions. The program can close your account, void your miles, and cancel tickets bought with sold miles. Brokers advertise around 1 to 1.4 US cents per mile. A good Business redemption pays more, entirely within the rules. See [the broker section above](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-miles-value#sell-miles>).

Are KLM miles and Air France miles the same as Flying Blue miles?

Yes. There is no separate KLM or Air France mileage currency. Flying Blue is the [single loyalty program](<https://skystatus.pro/guide/flying-blue-beginners-guide>) of Air France, KLM and Transavia, in the SkyTeam alliance. Whichever airline you fly or earn with, the balance lands in the same Flying Blue account.
