Why I Built SkyStatus

For years, I tracked my Flying Blue progress in spreadsheets. XP earned per flight. Miles from credit cards. Rollover calculations. Cost-per-mile analysis. It worked, but it was tedious, and I knew I wasn't the only one doing this.

The official Flying Blue app shows your current balance, but it doesn't answer the questions I actually cared about:

• How many XP do I need, and when does my qualification year end?
• What's my cost-per-mile across all earning sources?
• If I do a mileage run to Barcelona, will I make Gold before February?
• How much of my XP will roll over if I don't requalify?

SkyStatus Pro answers all of these. I built the tool I always wanted, and now it's available for everyone who's serious about optimizing their Flying Blue journey.

SkyStatus is built on a complete analytical model of the Flying Blue program, reconstructed from official rules and real-world data, and extended with projections and ROI insights Flying Blue itself does not provide.

My Background

By day, I work in the Dutch tech media industry, where I've spent 30 years building digital products and explaining complex topics in accessible ways. That experience shapes how SkyStatus works: data-driven, privacy-focused, and designed for people who want to understand the math behind their miles.

I fly for both business and leisure. This ranges from short hops within Europe to long-hauls to Asia and the Americas. I've done early-morning mileage runs to rack up XP before year-end, and I've carefully calculated whether buying miles makes sense for a specific redemption. (Spoiler: it usually doesn't.)

This combination of loyalty program experience and product development is why SkyStatus exists. It's not a corporate product. It's built by someone who actually uses it.
