Flying Blue sweet spots: the best award tickets

Last updated: February 19, 2026 - 18 min read - Based on Flying Blue and 15+ independent sources

What is a sweet spot?

A sweet spot is an award ticket where you get above-average value per Flying Blue mile. The average redemption value of a mile is around EUR 0.01. With a sweet spot, you get EUR 0.02 or more, sometimes up to EUR 0.08. This happens with partner airlines that have low surcharges, with Promo Rewards at a discount, or on routes where the cash price is high relative to the number of miles required.

What makes a sweet spot?

Flying Blue has used dynamic award pricing since June 2018. There is no fixed award chart anymore: the price in miles varies by flight, by day and by cabin class. Yet there are structural patterns that make certain routes and airlines consistently cheaper than others. Those are the sweet spots.

A route becomes a sweet spot when one or more of these factors come together:

Rule of thumb: the average value of a Flying Blue mile is around EUR 0.01. Anything above that is a good deal. At EUR 0.02+, you have a sweet spot. The best Business Class sweet spots deliver EUR 0.03-0.08 per mile.
SkyStatus Redemption Calculator: AMS-MNL for 120,000 miles with value EUR 0.0177 per mile, rated POOR
What a poor redemption looks like: Amsterdam-Manila for 120,000 miles yields only EUR 0.0177 per mile. SkyStatus rates this as POOR - your miles are worth more than this.

Minimum fares as reference

To assess whether a price is good, you need to know the floor prices. These are the minimum fares for one-way flights on Air France and KLM (after the January 2025 increase):

Route Economy Premium Eco Business
Within Europe (short) 5,000 - 10,000 - 20,000 - 25,000
North America 25,000 40,000 60,000
Asia 25,000 - 35,000 40,000 - 50,000 60,000 - 85,000
Africa 20,000 - 30,000 40,000 50,000 - 70,000
South America 25,000 - 35,000 40,000 - 50,000 60,000 - 80,000

Minimum fares after the January 13, 2025 increase. Prices per one-way, excluding taxes and surcharges. Transatlantic minimums (25,000/40,000/60,000) exactly verified. Other regions indicative based on multiple sources. Source: flyingblue.com, One Mile at a Time, Frequent Miler.

Europe: SAS, North Africa and Promo Rewards

SAS to Scandinavia (since September 2024)

Since SAS joined SkyTeam in September 2024, you can spend Flying Blue miles on SAS flights. This is one of the best sweet spots for short European flights, for two reasons: the miles price is often lower than on KLM, and the surcharges are minimal.

Route Cabin Miles (one-way) Surcharges
Amsterdam - Oslo Economy 4,900 ~EUR 29
Amsterdam - Stockholm Economy 5,900 ~EUR 29
Amsterdam - Copenhagen Economy 6,700 ~EUR 29
Amsterdam - Copenhagen Business 14,100 ~EUR 29
Boston - Stockholm Economy 21,300 ~EUR 29
Chicago - Stockholm Business 40,900 ~EUR 29

Surcharges on SAS flights are fixed and low (around EUR 29), regardless of the route.

Why SAS is a sweet spot: a KLM flight Amsterdam-Copenhagen easily costs 10,000+ miles and EUR 50-60 in surcharges. With SAS you pay 6,700 miles and EUR 29. That saves over 30% on miles and half on surcharges. On top of that, SAS includes 23 kg checked baggage.
SkyStatus Add Flight wizard: SAS Business Class AMS-CPH-OSL with 60 XP and 4,296 miles per segment
A SAS Business Class flight AMS-CPH-OSL logged in SkyStatus: 60 XP and 4,296 miles across two segments. Partner airlines like SAS are automatically recognized as SkyTeam partners.

North Africa = European fares

This is one of the least known sweet spots: Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya are priced as European destinations by Flying Blue. That means an award ticket to Marrakech or Casablanca costs the same as a short European flight: from around 10,000 miles one-way in Economy.

Cash tickets to Morocco easily cost EUR 300-500 return during peak season. With miles you pay a fraction. This makes North Africa one of the best destinations for your miles from Amsterdam.

Intra-European Promo Rewards

Short flights within Europe regularly appear as Promo Rewards. With 25% off the minimum fare, you then pay:

North America: transatlantic and Delta

KLM and Air France transatlantic

The transatlantic route from Amsterdam is one of the most popular award bookings. After the January 2025 increase, the minimum fares are:

Cabin Minimum (one-way) Promo (25% off) Surcharges (from AMS)
Economy 25,000 miles 18,750 miles ~EUR 100
Premium Economy 40,000 miles 30,000 miles ~EUR 150
Business 60,000 miles 45,000 miles ~EUR 200-350

Prices after the January 13, 2025 increase. Business Class went from 50,000 to 60,000 miles (+20%). Promo prices are 25% off the minimum fare. Source: One Mile at a Time, The Points Guy.

Example calculation: Business Class AMS-JFK

A cash ticket for KLM Business Class Amsterdam-New York costs around EUR 3,000+ one-way during peak season. With a Promo Reward you pay 45,000 miles + ~EUR 250 surcharges. If you value the miles at EUR 0.01 each, you effectively "pay" EUR 700 for a ticket worth EUR 3,000. That is a value of EUR 0.06 per mile, six times the average value.

SkyStatus Redemption Calculator: AMS-JFK for 45,000 miles with value EUR 0.0611 per mile, rated EXCELLENT
The same calculation for AMS-JFK: 45,000 miles for a ticket worth EUR 3,000 yields EUR 0.0611 per mile. SkyStatus rates this as EXCELLENT - a true sweet spot.

Delta via Flying Blue: no fuel surcharge

This is one of the smartest ways to spend Flying Blue miles: book Delta flights via Flying Blue instead of through Delta SkyMiles. The advantage: Delta charges no fuel surcharge through Flying Blue, making the total cost significantly lower.

Delta is especially interesting for:

Flying Blue vs Delta SkyMiles: the same Delta flight is regularly cheaper through Flying Blue than through Delta's own program. Example: Atlanta-Munich Economy costs around 26,000 Flying Blue miles, while Delta SkyMiles asks 41,000 miles for the same seat. Always check both programs.
Departing from Paris is more expensive: the French aviation tax makes departures from CDG significantly more expensive than from AMS. On a Business Class return to the US, this difference is EUR 100-200. Where possible, choose KLM from Amsterdam over Air France from Paris.

Caribbean: ABC islands and French Caribbean

For Dutch travelers, the direct KLM flights to the Caribbean are among the most attractive award destinations. KLM flies nonstop from Amsterdam to Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire and Sint Maarten.

Route Cabin Indicative miles (one-way)
Amsterdam - Curacao Economy from ~26,000
Amsterdam - Curacao (Promo) Economy from ~22,500
Amsterdam - Aruba Economy from ~26,000
Amsterdam - Bonaire Economy from ~26,000

Caribbean routes are dynamically priced. The listed prices are indicative minimums. Promo fares appear regularly on these routes. Source: flyingblue.com.

Air France also flies to Martinique, Guadeloupe and Saint Martin from Paris. These French Caribbean routes regularly appear as Promo Rewards.

Strategy: Caribbean routes are very popular during peak season (December-March) and the dynamic price can increase significantly. Book as early as possible (up to 359 days ahead) or wait for a Promo Reward. The calendar trick helps you find the cheapest day.

South America: Air Europa from Madrid

This is the most frequently cited sweet spot in the entire Flying Blue program: Air Europa Business Class from Madrid to South America. Why? Two words: no fuel surcharge.

Top sweet spot: Air Europa Business to South America

43,000 - 60,000 miles EUR 39 - 60 surcharges Value: up to EUR 0.08/mile

Air Europa flies from Madrid to Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Lima, Bogota and other South American cities. Because Air Europa charges no fuel surcharge on award tickets, you pay just EUR 39-60 in surcharges for a Business Class seat. By comparison, KLM charges EUR 200-400 in surcharges on the same route.

Cash tickets for these flights easily cost EUR 2,000-4,000 one-way in Business Class. At 60,000 miles + EUR 60, this is one of the best uses of your Flying Blue miles.

The downside: you need to get to Madrid yourself. From Amsterdam, you can solve this with:

Copa Airlines is another interesting partner for South America. Via the hub in Panama City, you can fly to destinations like Rio de Janeiro (from 18,000 miles Economy one-way) with reasonable surcharges.

How do you get to 60,000 miles? The fastest way to accumulate miles without flying is through everyday credit card spending. Earning 1-1.5 miles per euro on regular purchases adds up quickly, and welcome bonuses can get you to your first intercontinental award in no time.

Asia: China Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and intra-Asia

China Airlines: Business Class to Taiwan

China Airlines offers an excellent Business Class to Taipei for 57,500 miles + around EUR 200 surcharges one-way from Europe. Flights depart from Prague and Vienna, which requires a short positioning flight from Amsterdam.

Watch the availability: China Airlines often opens award seats only a few weeks before departure, not months in advance. This makes planning ahead difficult. Monitor availability via Seats.aero or AwardFares.

Vietnam Airlines: Business Class to Vietnam

Vietnam Airlines Business Class from Europe costs around 64,000 miles + EUR 200-316 surcharges one-way. Flights depart from cities like Frankfurt and Paris. Cash tickets for the same route cost EUR 2,000-3,000, pushing the value per mile well above EUR 0.03.

KLM and Air France to East Asia

KLM flies nonstop from Amsterdam to Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, among others. Minimum fares are around 25,000-35,000 miles in Economy and 60,000-85,000 in Business. With Promo Rewards, these prices drop by 25%.

Intra-Asian flights: hidden gems

One of the least known sweet spots are short flights within Asia on SkyTeam partners. The miles price is low and surcharges are minimal:

Route Miles (one-way) Surcharges
Short routes (e.g. domestic) from 6,000 ~EUR 15
Ho Chi Minh City - Seoul 13,500 ~EUR 15
Seoul - Bali 17,000 ~EUR 52
Stockholm - Tokyo (SAS) 27,100 ~EUR 29

Prices verified February 2026.

Combine them: fly with KLM or Air France to an Asian hub (e.g. Bangkok or Singapore) and separately book a cheap intra-Asian flight with miles. This way you build a flexible round trip using miles as payment for each segment.

Africa: Kenya Airways and North Africa

Kenya Airways: the best partner for Africa

Kenya Airways is a SkyTeam partner that offers excellent value for flights within and to Africa. Surcharges are low and miles prices are competitive.

Route Cabin Miles (one-way) Surcharges
Nairobi - Zanzibar Economy 5,000 EUR 110
Nairobi - Mahe (Seychelles) Economy 12,500 EUR 85

Cash tickets Nairobi-Zanzibar cost around EUR 220. With 5,000 miles + EUR 110, you save roughly half, including 2x23 kg checked baggage. Prices verified February 2026.

Combine a KLM flight to Nairobi with Kenya Airways flights to East African destinations. The KLM flight Amsterdam-Nairobi costs from around 20,000-30,000 miles in Economy, and then you hop onward with Kenya Airways for 5,000-12,500 miles per segment.

North Africa: European fares

As mentioned earlier, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya are priced as European destinations by Flying Blue. This is a structural advantage you can use again and again:

KLM, Air France and their partner airlines offer extensive networks to North Africa. The combination of low miles prices and high cash prices makes this a consistent sweet spot.

Pacific: Air Tahiti and Oceania

Air Tahiti: island-hopping in French Polynesia

A unique and little-known sweet spot: you can spend Flying Blue miles on Air Tahiti, the regional airline of French Polynesia. This opens the possibility of island-hopping between Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora and the Cook Islands.

Route Miles (one-way) Surcharges
Papeete - Moorea 6,000 ~USD 29
Papeete - Bora Bora 15,000 ~USD 36
Papeete - Cook Islands 30,000 variable

Source: One Mile at a Time, Frequent Miler.

Dream trip with miles: fly with Air France from Paris to Papeete (Tahiti), and then island-hop with Air Tahiti to Moorea and Bora Bora. The regional flights cost just 6,000-15,000 miles each. Cash tickets for these short flights are relatively expensive, which drives up the value per mile.

Oceania via partners

For Australia and New Zealand, there are multiple options via Flying Blue partners:

Promo Rewards: the monthly discount

Promo Rewards are the fastest route to a sweet spot. Every month, Flying Blue publishes a set of routes with 25-50% off the minimum fare. Only available on Air France and KLM flights.

How do Promo Rewards work?

Typical Promo Rewards pricing

Route Cabin Normal minimum Promo (25% off)
Within Europe (short) Economy 10,000 7,500

Intercontinental Economy 25,000 18,750
Intercontinental Business 60,000 45,000

7 booking tips for maximum value

1. Use the calendar trick

Search on klm.com with "Book with miles", 1 passenger, one-way and leave the date field empty. You get a calendar overview across 11 months. Read the full explanation in our guide to award availability.

2. Always search one-way

Flying Blue prices awards per direction. By searching one-way, you can book outbound and return on different dates, in different cabins (Economy outbound, Business return) or even fly with different airlines.

3. Compare KLM with partner airlines

The same destination can be significantly cheaper via a partner. Always compare KLM/Air France with partners like Air Europa, SAS, Delta and Kenya Airways. Look not just at the miles, but also at the surcharges.

4. Be flexible with dates

The difference between Tuesday and Friday can be 50% or more. Midweek flights (Tuesday, Wednesday) are almost always cheaper. During low season, you find the floor prices.

5. Check Promo Rewards on the 1st of the month

Popular routes in Business Class sell out within days. Check on the 1st and book without hesitation. Visit flyingblue.com on the 1st of each month.

6. Calculate your value per mile

Divide the cash price of the ticket by the number of miles. Above EUR 0.01 is good, above EUR 0.02 is a sweet spot. More about the calculation in our guide to cost per mile.

The Redemption Log in SkyStatus: six awards with automatic value rating. AMS-YYZ Business (180,000 miles, EUR 0.0317/mile) scores GOOD, while last-minute upgrades score POOR. This teaches you which redemptions truly deliver value.

7. Consider a free stopover

Flying Blue allows a free stopover of at least 24 hours in Amsterdam or Paris on award tickets. This must be booked by phone. Example: fly to Bangkok with a few days in Paris as an intermediate stop, on a single award ticket.

Child discount: children aged 2-11 get a 25% discount on the award fare in miles. This applies in all cabins, both on KLM/Air France and on partners. Infants (0-2) fly free on a lap (taxes and surcharges only).
