Flying Blue Amex Silver vs Gold vs Platinum comparison
The Flying Blue American Express cards compared
There are three Flying Blue credit cards from American Express in the Netherlands. Each is aimed at a different type of traveler, and they are the only credit cards that earn XP for Flying Blue status.
Flying Blue American Express (entry card)
The free card for anyone who wants to start earning miles.
- Cost: free (EUR 0 per month)
- Earn rate: 0.5 miles per euro spent
- Welcome bonus: 2,500 miles
- XP bonus: no annual XP bonus
Ideal if you want to get started at no cost and just passively earn miles.
Flying Blue American Express Gold
The sweet spot for most Flying Blue members. This is the card I recommend most often.
- Cost: EUR 16.50 per month
- Earn rate: 1 mile per euro (1.5 miles at KLM and Air France)
- Welcome bonus: up to 40,000 miles (with EUR 4,000 spending, payout: 50% after 7 months, 50% after 13 months)
- XP bonus: 30 XP per year, nearly a third of the 100 XP needed for Silver

Flying Blue American Express Platinum
The premium choice for those who want to build status and miles quickly.
- Cost: EUR 55 per month
- Earn rate: 1.5 miles per euro (2.0 at KLM and Air France)
- Welcome bonus: up to 120,000 miles (with EUR 4,000 spending, payout: 50% after 7 months, 50% after 13 months)
- XP bonus: 60 XP per year, more than half of the 100 XP needed for Silver

My advice
For most travelers, the Gold Card is the best choice. You earn twice as many miles as with the entry card, get 30 XP per year, and the cost is manageable. Choose the entry card if you rarely fly. Choose Platinum if you want to build status fast: with 60 XP per year and a welcome bonus of up to 120,000 miles, you build a serious balance in no time.
Tip: also consider the regular American Express Gold or Platinum Card. These earn Membership Rewards points that can be transferred to Flying Blue (1,000 MR = 800 miles). They don't give XP, but offer other benefits such as Priority Pass (Platinum).
