Claiming miles retroactively - how it works

Good news: forgetting to enter your Flying Blue number is not a disaster. In most cases you can still claim your miles. Here is what you need to know.

The standard rule: 6 months

Flying Blue gives you 6 months after your flight to request missing miles. This applies to:

  • KLM flights
  • Air France flights
  • All SkyTeam partner flights

The deadline runs from the date of the flight, not the booking date.

How do you claim missing miles?

Follow these steps:

  1. Go to flyingblue.com and log in
  2. Navigate to "Claim Missing Miles" (under your account or via the help portal)
  3. Fill in the form with:
    • Your booking reference (PNR code, 6 characters)
    • Your ticket number (13 digits, starts with 074 for KLM or 057 for Air France)
    • The flight dates and routes
  4. Submit the request

For KLM and Air France flights this is usually processed within 5-10 business days. For SkyTeam partners it can take longer, sometimes 4-6 weeks.

What if it has been more than 6 months?

Officially the deadline is 6 months. But there are options:

  • Contact customer service via phone or social media. With a good reason (hospitalization, extended travel) they sometimes make exceptions
  • Always keep your boarding passes - digital or physical. This is your proof
  • Keep your e-tickets - the confirmation email of your booking contains your ticket number

Common problems

Sometimes a claim is rejected. The most common reasons:

  • Wrong booking class: some very cheap tickets (Light fares at partners) do not earn miles
  • Codeshare confusion: if you booked via a non-SkyTeam airline but flew on a KLM aircraft, check which flight number is on your ticket
  • Already claimed elsewhere: if the miles are already credited to another loyalty program, you cannot move them to Flying Blue

Tip for the future

Save your Flying Blue number in the profiles of KLM, Air France and all SkyTeam partners where you have an account. That way it is automatically added to every booking.

Tip: want to earn miles automatically in the future without forgetting? With a Flying Blue American Express you earn miles on all your daily spending, completely automatically.
