When do Flying Blue miles expire?

Asked by Joost on February 24, 2026

I haven't flown in a while and I'm worried my miles will expire. How long are they valid?

Flying Blue miles don't just expire

Good news: your Flying Blue miles do not expire as long as your account stays active. The rule is simple: you need to earn at least 1 mile within 24 months through any eligible activity. Once you do, the clock resets and you get another 24 months.

Major update: May 4, 2026

Flying Blue has simplified how miles validity works. Previously, only flights and Amex purchases extended your entire balance ("overall extending"), while other activities only protected recently earned miles ("partial extending"). From May 4, 2026, every eligible earning activity extends your entire miles balance by 24 months. One validity date, one simple rule.

What counts as activity?

From May 4, 2026, all of these extend your entire balance:

  • Flying with KLM, Air France, Transavia or any other SkyTeam partner
  • Credit card spending with a Flying Blue American Express
  • Online shopping via the Flying Blue Store
  • Subscribe to Miles - a monthly subscription that automatically credits miles to your account
  • Transferring miles to or receiving miles from another Flying Blue member
  • Partner activities such as hotel stays or car rentals through Flying Blue partners

Note: buying miles and spending/redeeming miles still do NOT count as extending activities.

What happens when your miles expire?

If the 24 months pass without any eligible activity, you lose all your miles at once. There is no partial expiry - it is all or nothing. Flying Blue does send reminder emails before this happens.

My advice

The easiest way to keep your miles active is a Flying Blue American Express credit card. Every purchase earns miles, so your account stays active automatically. The entry-level card is free (EUR 0/month). But from May 4, even a hotel booking or Shopping Portal purchase extends your entire balance - the Amex just requires zero extra effort.

You can check your miles expiry status in the Flying Blue app or on the website under your account overview.
