What is a Flying Blue mile worth in euros?

The value of a Flying Blue mile depends on how you spend it

There is no fixed exchange rate for Flying Blue miles. The value per mile varies enormously. On average you can count on 1 to 1.5 eurocent per mile, but the difference between spending smartly and not is significant.

Value per travel class

• Economy Class - 0.8 to 1.2 eurocent per mile.
• Premium Economy - 1.0 to 1.8 eurocent per mile.
• Business Class - 1.5 to 3.0 eurocent per mile. This is where the real value lies.
• La Premiere - 2.0 to 5.0+ eurocent per mile. The absolute top value.

What does it cost to earn miles?

Via Subscribe to Miles you pay about 1.1 to 1.3 eurocent per mile. With a Flying Blue Amex Platinum (EUR 55/month, 1.5 miles/euro) you earn miles much more cheaply: with EUR 2,000 in monthly spending, a mile effectively costs you less than 0.4 eurocent. That makes any redemption above 0.5 cent per mile profitable.

The calculation formula

Cash price of the ticket (in cents) divided by the number of required miles = value per mile in eurocents.

Example: a ticket costs EUR 1,800 cash or 80,000 miles. That is 180,000 cents / 80,000 miles = 2.25 eurocent per mile. An excellent deal.

Rules of thumb

• Below 1.0 cent per mile: bad deal - better to book with cash
• 1.0-1.5 cent per mile: reasonable - acceptable if you already have the miles
• Above 1.5 cent per mile: good deal - this is the sweet spot
• Above 2.5 cent per mile: excellent - book immediately
