Flying Blue Promo Rewards: discounts on award tickets

Last updated: 27 February 2026 - 10 min read - View sources

What are Promo Rewards?

Promo Rewards are monthly offers from Flying Blue that let you book award tickets for 25-50% fewer miles than the standard rate. Every month, new destinations are selected on Air France and KLM flights. They are the cheapest way to redeem miles on AF/KLM flights and one of the biggest advantages of the Flying Blue program.

How do Promo Rewards work?

Since June 2018, Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing for award tickets: the price in miles varies by flight, date and cabin class. There is no longer a fixed award chart. However, every route has a minimum rate, and Promo Rewards offer a discount on that minimum rate.

The concept is straightforward:

  1. Flying Blue selects a number of destinations each month
  2. On those destinations, a discount of 25% to 50% applies on the minimum rate
  3. The discount applies to Air France and KLM flights (not partner airlines)
  4. The travel period varies per offer, but is usually 1-6 months in the future
  5. All Flying Blue members with enough miles can book
SkyStatus Monthly Flow chart: miles earned per month (blue) and miles spent on awards (red), November 2025 large award booking of 285,000 miles
The Monthly Flow in SkyStatus shows exactly when you earned miles (blue) and spent them on awards (red). The large dip in November 2025 is a Business Class award booking - exactly the right moment to take advantage of Promo Rewards.
Important: the 25-50% discount applies to the minimum rate, not the dynamic price. On popular dates the actual price may be higher, even with Promo Rewards. Always search flexibly on dates to find the lowest price.

Promo Rewards appear on the Flying Blue Rewards page. You can see which destinations are available each month. Then book via klm.com or airfrance.com using the "Book with miles" option.

Pricing: how much do you save?

The savings depend on the route and cabin class. Below you can see the minimum rates for one-way on Air France/KLM and the Promo Reward prices at 25% discount (the most common discount):

Route Cabin Normal minimum Promo (25% off) Savings
Within Europe (short) Economy 10,000 miles 7,500 miles 2,500 miles
Within Europe (short) Business 25,000 miles 18,750 miles 6,250 miles
Intercontinental Economy 25,000 miles 18,750 miles 6,250 miles
Intercontinental Premium Economy 37,500 miles 28,125 miles 9,375 miles
Intercontinental Business 60,000 miles 45,000 miles 15,000 miles

Prices per one-way. With 50% discount (rarer), prices are even lower. Source: flyingblue.com.

Example: intercontinental Business Class round trip

Suppose you book Amsterdam - New York round trip in Business Class with Promo Rewards (25% discount):

  • Regular minimum rate: 2 x 60,000 = 120,000 miles
  • Promo Reward rate: 2 x 45,000 = 90,000 miles
  • Savings: 30,000 miles (EUR 360 at EUR 0.012/mile)

That is 30,000 miles you do not need to earn or buy. At EUR 0.012/mile, that is a saving of EUR 360.

SkyStatus Redemption Calculator: AMS-SFO award for 80,000 miles, cash value EUR 3,499, value per mile EUR 0.0365, rating GOOD with +761% above baseline
The Redemption Calculator computes the exact value of your award ticket. This example: AMS-SFO for 80,000 miles yields EUR 0.0365 per mile, 761% above your average acquisition cost. A Promo Reward makes this even more attractive.

Value per mile with Promo Rewards

The value of a Promo Reward depends on the cash price of the ticket. If a Business Class round trip Amsterdam - New York normally costs EUR 4,000 and you book for 90,000 miles + approximately EUR 400 in taxes and surcharges:

This makes Promo Rewards in Business Class one of the best sweet spots in the Flying Blue program.

Step by step: booking a Promo Reward

How to book a Promo Reward

  1. Check the destinations: go to flyingblue.com/en/spend/flights/rewards on the 1st of the month. You can see the discounted price and travel period per destination.
  2. Search on klm.com or airfrance.com: go to the booking module, choose "Book with miles", select your destination and search one-way with 1 passenger. Leave the date field empty for a calendar overview.
  3. Compare dates: the Promo price does not appear on every day. Search flexibly and look for the cheapest dates. Midweek flights (Tuesday, Wednesday) are almost always cheaper.
  4. Verify the price: confirm that you see the Promo rate and not the regular dynamic price. The Promo price is never higher than the advertised discounted rate.
  5. Book immediately: popular Business Class routes sell out quickly. Do not hesitate too long.

Always search one-way: Flying Blue prices awards per direction. By searching one-way you can book outbound and return on different dates, in different cabins or even on different routes. Read more in our guide on award availability.
Cancellation rules: you can cancel an award ticket with Flying Blue free of charge within 24 hours of booking. After that, cancellation fees apply and your miles are refunded minus a fee. Feel free to book if you are unsure, but decide within 24 hours.

Strategy: grabbing the best Promo Rewards

1. Be quick

Promo Rewards in Business Class on popular routes (New York, Bangkok, Tokyo) often sell out within days. The first days after publication have the most availability. Set a reminder for the 1st of the month.

2. Keep miles ready

You need enough miles in your account to book immediately. If you consistently fall short on miles, consider:

3. Be flexible with destination

Destinations change every month. If you have no preference for a specific destination, scan the entire list. Sometimes surprising routes appear with excellent value. You can also wait until your dream destination shows up and then act fast.

4. Combine with a stopover

Although Promo Rewards themselves do not allow stopovers, you can combine smartly: book the outbound as a Promo Reward and the return as a regular award ticket with a free stopover in Amsterdam or Paris. This way you benefit from both advantages.

5. Compare with partner airlines

Promo Rewards only apply to AF/KLM flights. On some routes, partner airlines are cheaper, even without a promotion. Air Europa to South America starts from 43,000 miles with just EUR 39 in surcharges. Always compare before you book.

Example: Promo Reward vs. partner airline

Route: Amsterdam - Buenos Aires, Business Class, one-way

  • KLM Promo Reward (25% off): 45,000 miles + ~EUR 250 surcharges
  • Air Europa (via Madrid): 43,000 miles + ~EUR 39 surcharges
  • Conclusion: Air Europa wins on surcharges, Promo Reward comparable in miles. Check both options.

Exclusive Promo Rewards (Flying Blue Extra)

In addition to the regular Promo Rewards for all members, Flying Blue offers an Exclusive variant only for Flying Blue Extra subscribers (Essential or Extended). The Exclusive Promo Rewards include extra routes that are not available to regular members.

Restrictions and conditions

Promo Rewards have several important restrictions you should know about:

Child discount: children aged 2-11 get 25% off the award rate in miles. This also applies on top of Promo Rewards. Infants (0-2 years) fly free on your lap (only taxes and surcharges). Source: flyingblue.com.

When are Promo Rewards NOT the best choice?

Promo Rewards are not always the optimal use of your miles. Consider alternatives in these situations:

If you want a stopover

Flying Blue allows a free stopover of 24 hours to 1 year on one-way awards. This must be booked by phone and works on regular award tickets, not on Promo Rewards. If you want a stopover in Amsterdam or Paris, book a regular award ticket.

If a partner airline is cheaper

On certain routes, partner airlines are structurally cheaper, even without a Promo discount:

If you need flexible booking

Promo Rewards have a fixed travel period. Need flexibility? A regular award ticket is better, because you can book any date up to 11 months ahead.

SkyStatus Redemption Log: La Premiere CDG-JFK LEGENDARY (EUR 0.0510/mile), Business Award SIN EXCELLENT (EUR 0.0282/mile), Companion Ticket LOSS (EUR 0.0000/mile)
The Redemption Log rates every award booking. La Premiere CDG-JFK scores LEGENDARY at EUR 0.051 per mile. Business Class to Singapore scores EXCELLENT. A Promo Reward could have elevated the EXCELLENT booking to LEGENDARY by using fewer miles.

If the difference is minimal

For Economy flights within Europe, the savings are 2,500 miles (EUR 30 at EUR 0.012/mile). If that means you are less flexible, it may not be worth it. For Business Class intercontinental, the saving of 15,000 miles (EUR 180) is substantial.
