Definition

Retroclaiming (also called retroactive crediting) is the process of having missing Flying Blue miles and XP credited after a flight. You have 6 months from the flight date to do this. It may be needed if your Flying Blue number was missing from the booking, if a partner flight was not automatically credited, or if a technical error occurred. It is one of the most underused rights of Flying Blue members: thousands of miles are lost because travelers do not know they can claim retroactively.

Step-by-step: claim miles retroactively

Claiming missing miles is simpler than most members think. In many cases, your miles are credited within minutes. Below is the process for the three most common situations.

KLM or Air France flights

For direct KLM and Air France flights, the online form is the fastest option. The system validates your claim automatically and miles often appear within minutes.

Step 1: Wait at least 48 hours

Miles are automatically processed in a batch that runs daily around 04:00 CET. Wait at least 48 hours after your flight before submitting a claim. First check your Flying Blue account to see if the miles already appear under "My activity".

Step 2: Open the retroclaim form

Go to flyingblue.com/mileshub/claim/flights and log in. You can also navigate via your Flying Blue dashboard to "miles and XP" and then "Claim missing miles".

Step 3: Enter your flight details

The form accepts three options:

  • Ticket number (13 digits) - fastest and most reliable
  • Booking reference (PNR, 6 characters) - also works well
  • Flight number + date - if you do not have the other two

Step 4: Confirm and wait

For KLM/AF flights with a ticket number, processing is nearly instant. You will receive a confirmation and the miles will appear in your account, often within minutes to a maximum of 48 hours.

SkyTeam partner flights

Since 2016, SkyTeam has a real-time retroclaim system that validates claims via a shared database of all alliance members. This means you can follow the same online procedure for most SkyTeam partners as for KLM/AF. However, processing takes longer: expect 3 to 7 business days.

Note: some partners require manual processing. Etihad is the most well-known example: miles are never automatically credited and you always need to submit a claim yourself, including your boarding pass and e-ticket.

Non-SkyTeam partner flights

Flying Blue has partnerships with 36 airlines, many outside SkyTeam (such as Etihad, Qantas, Japan Airlines, Virgin Atlantic). For these flights, the online form sometimes works, but not always. If the form does not recognize your flight, switch to WhatsApp or customer service. Have your boarding pass and ticket number ready.

4. Phone (customer service)

5. Email

Slowest: days to weeks

Email is the slowest channel. Processing times of weeks to months have been reported. Use email only as a last resort or when you need written documentation.

Why miles were not credited

Before submitting a claim, it helps to understand why your miles may be missing. This helps you choose the right channel and fill in your claim correctly.

1. Flying Blue number was missing from the booking

For codeshare flights, the flight number on your ticket (the marketing carrier) determines how miles are credited, not the airline that actually operates the flight. A flight booked as KL1234 but operated by Delta is credited as a KLM flight (revenue-based). The same seat booked as DL5678 is credited as a Delta partner flight (distance-based). This can make a big difference in your miles earning.

5. Name mismatch

Even small differences between your ticket name and your Flying Blue name (e.g. "J. Smith" vs "John Smith") can block automatic crediting. Solution: make sure the name in your Flying Blue profile exactly matches your passport.

Partner flights: known issues per airline

The retroclaim experience varies significantly per partner airline. Below are the airlines where most issues are reported, and what you can do.

Etihad Airways (EY)

Miles are never automatically credited. You always need to submit a claim yourself, including boarding pass and e-ticket. This is a known quirk of the Etihad partnership. Submit your claim as soon as you are back, do not wait until the deadline. Etihad rules on flyingblue.com.

China Eastern (MU)

Frequent issues with automatic crediting, especially with OTA bookings. Flying Blue sometimes asks for a copy of your e-ticket (not just your boarding pass). Tip: always save your complete booking confirmation with ticket number for China Eastern flights.

Kenya Airways (KQ)

Inconsistent crediting: one segment may appear within a day, while another segment on the same trip takes weeks. If not everything has been credited after 2 weeks, submit a claim for the missing segments.

Saudia (SV)

Miles may be missing and recovery without a ticket number is difficult. The PNR can help retrieve details via the Saudia website if the booking is recent enough. Tip: write down your ticket number before flying.

Korean Air (KE)

Special cases

Flights before your Flying Blue membership

Just joined? You can retroactively claim flights you took before your enrollment, as long as they fall within 6 months of the flight date. This is a one-time opportunity for new members. Use the regular retroclaim form with your ticket number.

Miles credited to the wrong program

Example: you fly Delta but your miles ended up in SkyMiles instead of Flying Blue. Unfortunately, you cannot directly transfer miles between programs. The best approach:

  1. Contact the program that received the miles by mistake
  2. Ask them to reverse the crediting
  3. Then submit a retroclaim with Flying Blue (within 6 months of the flight)

Prevention is better: always check which frequent flyer program is in your booking before you fly. During online check-in, you can often still change this.

Original Routing Credit (ORC)

If you are involuntarily rebooked (cancellation, schedule change), you are entitled to miles based on your original route, not the route actually flown. This can be crucial for status qualification: a change from a direct flight to a short connection can cost you XP.

How to claim ORC: submit a claim via the retroclaim form or customer service. Explicitly mention that you were involuntarily rebooked and include documentation of both your original and changed itinerary. Keep both itineraries and all ticket numbers.

SAF XP not credited

SAF contributions (sustainable aviation fuel) are processed through a separate IT pipeline. They do not appear if you claim your XP immediately after the flight.
