Expert answer

Ultimate is the highest status level within Flying Blue and works fundamentally differently from the other levels. It is not achievable for everyone, but the benefits are exceptional.

Ultimate works differently: UXP, not regular XP

This is the most important thing to understand: Ultimate uses a separate points system called UXP (Ultimate XP). You need 900 UXP within your qualification period, and you must already have Platinum status.

The crucial limitation: you earn UXP only on flights marketed by Air France (AF) or KLM (KL). It is about the two-letter code on your ticket. Partner flights with Delta, Korean Air or other SkyTeam airlines earn regular XP, but zero UXP.

The status thresholds for comparison

  • Silver - 100 XP
  • Gold - 180 XP
  • Platinum - 300 XP
  • Ultimate - 900 UXP (separate system, requires Platinum)

Exclusive Ultimate benefits

On top of all Platinum benefits, as an Ultimate member you get:

  • Dedicated phone line - a separate customer service with minimal wait time
  • Maximum baggage allowance - extra checked bags included
  • Highest priority - you are at the top of the list for upgrades, overbookings and irregularities
  • Annual gift - Flying Blue surprises Ultimate members with a personal gift
  • Upgrade vouchers - periodically you receive vouchers for cabin upgrades

Is it realistic?

900 UXP on exclusively AF/KL flights is a significant challenge. In practice, this is mainly achievable for people who fly very frequently for business on KLM or Air France. Partner flights (Delta, Korean Air etc.) do not count toward UXP.

SAF contributions (sustainable aviation fuel) also earn UXP, approximately 1 UXP per EUR 10. That can help if you are close to the threshold.

If you have Platinum and do not reach the 900 UXP, you simply keep your Platinum status. There is no risk in trying. Use the SkyStatus Calculator to track your UXP progress.

Tip: a Flying Blue Amex Platinum (60 XP/year) helps you maintain Platinum status, so you can focus your flights on collecting UXP.
