Does parental leave break the Platinum for Life consecutive year counter?
Your counter does not reset to zero. The parental leave extension freezes your Platinum for Life progress rather than breaking it.
The normal P4L rule
You need 10 consecutive years of Platinum (earning 300 XP each year). If you fail to earn 300 XP in any year, the counter resets to zero. Example: 8 years Platinum, 1 year Gold, then Platinum again? Your counter is at 1, not 9.
With parental leave
When you request and receive a status extension for maternity, paternity, or adoption leave, Flying Blue maintains your Platinum status for one additional year. However, since you didn't actually earn 300 XP that year, the year does not count towards the 10-year requirement. Crucially though, it also does not break the consecutive streak.
Your scenario: With 7 years of P4L progress and one year of parental leave with a status extension, you would remain at 7 years after the leave. Your next qualifying year (earning 300 XP) would bring you to 8. Think of it as pressing "pause" rather than "reset".
This is similar to how COVID extensions worked in 2020-2021, though with one important difference: the COVID extensions actually counted as qualifying years (even without flying), while parental leave extensions do not. The shared principle is that neither breaks the consecutive chain.
Important limitations
- You can only extend your status for one consecutive year, not two
- You must proactively request the extension via Flying Blue customer service with supporting documentation
- The extension maintains your benefits but the year does not add to your P4L counter
