When does your Flying Blue qualification period start and end?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions and the answer surprises many people: your qualification period is not a calendar year. It is a personal period of 12 months that can be different for everyone.
How is your qualification period determined?
Your qualification period starts on the 1st day of the month after your last status change. A concrete example:
- Say you reached Gold status on March 15, 2025
- Your qualification period then runs from April 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026
- In those 12 months you must collect 180 XP again to keep Gold
If you have never had status before (Explorer), your first qualification period typically runs from your Flying Blue registration date.
Where can you check your period?
You can find your current qualification period in two places:
- Flying Blue app - go to your profile and view your status overview. Your end date is listed there.
- flyingblue.com - log in, go to "My account" and view your XP progress. The end date of your current period is shown there.
What happens at the end of the period?
On the last day of your qualification period the balance is evaluated:
- Collected enough XP? You keep your status (or move up if you have reached a higher threshold) and a new 12-month period begins.
- Not enough XP? Soft Landing kicks in: you drop one level and start a new period at that lower level.
Important detail: if you reach a higher level during your qualification period, a new 12-month period starts immediately. Say you have Silver and you reach 180 XP for Gold on June 20, then your new Gold period runs from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
Track your progress
In the SkyStatus Calculator you can see exactly how much XP you already have, how much more you need and when your qualification period ends. So you always know where you stand.
Tip: a Flying Blue Amex Platinum gives you 60 XP per year as a bonus. This counts toward your qualification period and can make the difference in keeping your status.
