Lounge access with Flying Blue

Lounge access is one of the most sought-after benefits in airline loyalty programs. With Flying Blue, free lounge access starts at Gold status (180 XP), granting entry to 750+ SkyTeam lounges worldwide. There are also other routes to the lounge: via a Business Class ticket, Flying Blue Extra, a day pass, or the Amex Platinum Card.

If you regularly fly intercontinental, this can save you EUR 1,000+ per year. Read how to reach Gold in our Gold status guide.

Gold: the gateway to the lounge

Gold status (180 XP) unlocks the most valuable travel benefit for many flyers: free access to 750+ SkyTeam lounges worldwide on international flights with SkyTeam airlines.

What Gold includes

Value of Gold lounge access

Suppose you fly intercontinental 8 times per year (4 return trips) and visit the lounge each time with a guest:

  • 8 lounge visits x EUR 65 (day pass) = EUR 520
  • 8 guest visits x EUR 65 = EUR 520
  • Total savings: EUR 1,040 per year

That alone exceeds the cost of the Flying Blue Amex Platinum Card (EUR 660/year), which also gives 60 XP per year toward Gold.

SkyStatus Silver status badge: 0 XP current, 180 XP target for Gold, 180 XP to go, Simulate run button
From Silver (or Explorer) you still need 180 XP for Gold and the accompanying lounge access. SkyStatus shows exactly how much XP you still need, and you can simulate routes to get there.
SkyStatus Status Savings calculator: Platinum Aspirational preset, Short Haul Economy EUR 130, Long Haul Economy EUR 295, Business Class EUR 60
The Status Savings calculator in SkyStatus calculates the monetary value of your status benefits, including lounge access. With Platinum at the Aspirational level, you save hundreds of euros per year on lounge visits.

Platinum and Ultimate: extra benefits

Platinum (300 XP)

Platinum offers the same SkyTeam lounge access as Gold, plus:

Ultimate (invitation only)

Ultimate is the highest level and granted by invitation only. In addition to all Platinum benefits, Ultimate offers:

Business Class: always lounge access

Passengers with a Business Class ticket on Air France, KLM, or a SkyTeam partner automatically have lounge access, regardless of their Flying Blue status. This applies on the day of the flight.

SkyStatus Flight Ledger with Business Class trips: BOG-AMS-CDG-BOG and CDG-TUN stopover, all flights BIZ class with KLM and Air France
Business Class flights in the Flight Ledger: every BIZ flight automatically gives lounge access, regardless of your Flying Blue status. Useful to see which trips already include lounge entry.
Business Class awards: if you book an award ticket in Business Class (with miles), you also get lounge access. This is an extra reason to invest in a Business Class sweet spot: you get not only a flat bed, but the lounge as well.

Buying lounge access (without status)

No Gold status and no Business Class ticket? You can still visit a lounge:

Day pass at the door or online

Silver discount

Silver members get a 25% discount on the purchase price of lounge access. This must be booked at least 25 hours before departure via the Flying Blue website. In practice, you save EUR 15-19 per visit.

Availability: lounges can be full, especially during peak hours. A day pass does not guarantee access if the lounge is at capacity. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Flying Blue Extra: lounge passes

Flying Blue Extra includes lounge passes as part of the subscription:

Plan Price/year Lounge passes Pass value
Essential EUR 379 2 passes ~EUR 130 (2 x EUR 65)
Extended EUR 699 4 passes ~EUR 260 (4 x EUR 65)

The passes are valid in Air France and KLM lounges at Paris CDG and Amsterdam Schiphol.

SkyStatus Flying Blue Extra Analyzer: comparison of None, Essential (EUR 379), and Extended (EUR 699) with lounge vouchers in the benefit breakdown
The Flying Blue Extra Analyzer in SkyStatus compares the three options. Note the lounge passes: Essential offers 2, Extended offers 4. But if you already have Gold status, those passes have zero value.
Flying Blue Extra official page: Essential EUR 379/year and Extended EUR 699/year with lounge vouchers, Exclusive Promo Rewards, and extra miles
The official Flying Blue Extra plans. Essential (EUR 379/year) offers 2 lounge passes, Extended (EUR 699/year) offers 4. Both also include Exclusive Promo Rewards and extra miles on AF/KL flights.
Value trap: if you already have Gold status or higher, you already get free lounge access on every SkyTeam flight. The Flying Blue Extra passes then have zero value. This is one of the biggest pitfalls of the subscription: the people who fly enough to justify it often already have status-based access. Read our critical analysis of Flying Blue Extra.

Amex and Priority Pass

The Flying Blue Amex cards do not offer direct lounge access. But they help indirectly:

Flying Blue Amex Platinum Card (EUR 55/month)

Flying Blue Amex Gold Card (EUR 16.50/month)

SkyStatus Risk Monitor: Platinum SECURED, 301/300 XP, Rollover Forecast 253 XP projected, no XP waste
The Risk Monitor tracks your Platinum status and rollover. With 301/300 XP, Platinum is secured for next year, with 253 XP rollover. This way you know whether your lounge access is safe for the next cycle.
Priority Pass via Amex: the regular American Express Platinum Card (not the Flying Blue co-branded version) offers a Priority Pass membership with access to 1,400+ lounges worldwide. This is a separate Amex product, not a Flying Blue benefit. If lounge access is your primary goal and you do not exclusively fly SkyTeam, this can be an alternative.

Lounges at Amsterdam Schiphol

Schiphol has several lounges relevant to Flying Blue travelers:

Lounge Location Access via
KLM Crown Lounge 25 Schengen, Level 2 near D59-87 gates Gold+, Business Class, day pass
KLM Crown Lounge 52 Non-Schengen, between pier E and F Gold+ (premium variant), Business Class
KLM Crown Lounge 82 Non-Schengen, E-pier Gold+, Business Class, day pass

The Crown Lounge 52 on Holland Boulevard is the newest and most premium KLM lounge. It offers a higher level of service with a la carte dishes, a more extensive bar, and a quieter work area.

Privium Members Club homepage at Schiphol: fast security, border passage, exclusive lounges, and parking benefits
Privium is Schiphol's own members club with exclusive lounges, fast security, and border passage. Holders of the Amex Platinum Card receive free Privium membership, including access to the Privium ClubLounges.
Privium ClubLounge Departures (before security, counter 9) and Privium ClubLounge West (after security, lounge 43) at Schiphol with luxury buffet and work cabins
The two Privium ClubLounges at Schiphol: Departures (before security, 05:30-21:00) and West (after security, 05:30-21:00). Both offer a luxury buffet, work cabins, and a relaxation area. ClubLounge West also has shower and hand spa facilities.
Tip for Schiphol: if you have a long layover, the lounge is the perfect place. Free food, drinks, wifi, and a quiet workspace. With Gold status, every connection becomes more comfortable.

Practical tips

1. Arrive early

Lounges can be full, especially during the morning rush. Arrive at least 2 hours before your flight to enjoy the lounge.

2. Check the guest policy

With Gold you may bring 1 guest traveling on the same flight. Children under 2 are often free. Check the specific rules of the lounge, as they may vary by location.

3. Use the SkyTeam Lounge Finder

Not sure which lounge is available at your airport? Use the SkyTeam Lounge Finder to search all 750+ lounges.

4. Showers and sleeping areas

Many intercontinental lounges offer showers, and some have sleeping areas. Ideal after a long flight or during a long layover. Ask at the reception desk about availability.

5. Do not photograph other guests

Privacy is important in the lounge. Do not take photos that show other guests. Most lounges have house rules about this.

Frequently asked questions

Do you get lounge access with Silver?

Not for free. Silver gives a 25% discount on the purchase of lounge access (book at least 25 hours in advance). Free lounge access starts at Gold (180 XP), with access to 750+ SkyTeam lounges and one guest.

Which lounges can you visit with Gold?

With Gold you have access to all 750+ SkyTeam lounges worldwide on international flights with SkyTeam airlines. This includes KLM Crown Lounges, Air France lounges, and lounges of partners like Delta, Korean Air, and China Airlines. You may bring 1 guest.

Do you also get lounge access with a Business Class award ticket?

Yes. Every passenger with a Business Class ticket has lounge access, even if it is an award ticket (booked with miles). This applies regardless of your Flying Blue status.

Does the Flying Blue Amex give lounge access?

The Flying Blue Amex cards do not give direct lounge access. They help indirectly: the Platinum Card gives 60 XP per year toward Gold (= free SkyTeam lounges), and the welcome bonus can provide enough miles for a Business Class award with lounge access.

How much does a day pass for the KLM Crown Lounge cost?

Approximately EUR 60-75, depending on the lounge and when you purchase. Booking online via klm.com is often cheaper than at the door. Silver members get a 25% discount.

Can I enter the lounge when flying European routes with Gold?

At Schiphol, Gold members can visit the KLM Crown Lounges even on European flights. At some foreign airports, lounge rules apply only to intercontinental flights. Check the rules for the specific lounge via the SkyTeam Lounge Finder.
