What are the benefits of Flying Blue Silver status?
Definitely worth getting! Silver is your first real status at Flying Blue and comes with tangible benefits.
The benefits of Silver status
- +50% miles bonus - on every flight you earn 50% extra miles (6 per EUR instead of 4 as Explorer)
- 1 extra checked bag (23 kg) - on top of your regular baggage, on AF, KLM and SkyTeam flights
- Priority boarding - you are called to board earlier, so you always have space in the overhead bin
- Seat selection at booking - you can reserve standard Economy seats for free
- Priority check-in - you do not have to stand in the regular queue
- SkyTeam Elite status - your Silver benefits apply across all 19 SkyTeam partners worldwide
What Silver does NOT offer
It is important to know what only comes at higher levels:
- No lounge access - that starts at Gold (180 XP)
- No SkyPriority - the separate security lane and baggage handling are also only from Gold
Honest advice
I have been through all status levels myself. Silver is a nice first step. The biggest jump in value is at Gold: that is where you get lounge access at 750+ SkyTeam lounges worldwide, and for many travelers that is the moment when status really becomes noticeable.
That said: the 50% extra miles and extra suitcase from Silver are absolutely noticeable, especially if you fly regularly.
How much does it cost to reach Silver?
You need 100 XP within your qualification period of 12 months. With a Flying Blue Amex Platinum (60 XP per year) you already have more than half, and you only need to earn 40 XP from flights. That is two short European round trips.
